Toxic Gas Detector Now Available With HART Communications Protocol
The TS4000H Intelligent Toxic Gas Detector from General Monitors (USA) is now compatible with the HART communication protocol. The TS4000H offers protection against a wide range of hazardous industrial gases and is able to safeguard against oxygen deficiency.
HART is a field-proven instrumentation communications protocol that is easy-to-use and provides uniform and consistent communication without disturbing the integrity of the 4-20mA analog signal. In addition to the process variable,
the HART protocol permits access to device configuration, diagnostics, as well as maintenance and alarm records. As a result, a whole host of additional information related to plant operation is available to the control room through HART. Unlike other digital communication protocols, HART is backward compatible with the installed base of instrumentation in use today.
With its advanced design, the TS4000H Toxic Gas Detector offers many valuable features including event logs, a clearly visible LED, and an indicator for remaining sensor life. In addition to the HART configuration, the TS4000H is also available in a Modbus configuration and with three 8-Amp relays. All of the electronics are contained within an explosion-proof housing so that sensor information can be processed at the sensor site.
Additionally, the interface module’s galvanically-isolated, intrinsically-safe design supports sensor field replacement without special tools or hot work permits. Further, the detector is easy to install and can self calibrate by activating a magnetic switch and applying gas. Process engineers who need to protect people, equipment, and the environment will find the TS4000H well suited for a broad range of industries: Petrochemical installations, oil and gas production facilities, waste and wastewater treatment sites, and power plants are some of hazardous environments to which the TS4000H can add great value. For worldwide application, the detector complies with ATEX, CSA, CE, GOST, and is certified for use in SIL 2 environments.
The TS4000H monitors a variety of toxic gases including: ammonia, carbon monoxide, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, oxygen deficiency, ozone, and sulphur dioxide. The system displays gas concentrations up to 500 ppm, fault codes for troubleshooting, prompts when calibration is needed, and provides complete status to the Control Room.
The introduction of a HART configuration extends the system capabilities for two way digital communication with the TS4000H. By combining explosion-proof certification with intrinsically safe inputs, the HART-equipped TS4000H provides high performance in hazardous locations. Access to convenient set up, calibration, and diagnostic options simplifies the devices’ operation and maintenance and reduces downtime.
Instrument Enclosures for Hazardous Areas
Detcon’s (USA) condulet enclosures are designed to house a wide range of instruments used in the detection, monitoring, measuring, and / or controlling of gases within hazardous areas.
The Aluminum J- Box has a 4 ¼” internal diameter, the Standard 316SS J- Box has a 3 ½” internal diameter and the Mini 316SS J-Box has a 2 ½” internal diameter. The enclosures are rated NEMA 7 explosion proof, and feature taper threaded hubs for ground continuity.
The enclosures serve as pull and splice boxes,
interconnect lengths of conduit, and provide access to conductors for easy maintenance and system changes. Both the Mini and the Standard are made of electropolished 316 Stainless Steel. The Mini features a solid cover enclosure while the Standard and the Aluminum offer an optional solid cover or glass lens.

The new WATCHDOG Gas and Smoke Alarm GRM from AFRISO (Germany) monitors the air in rooms of enclosed buildings for inflammable gases and/or smoke. When a clearly defined level of gas or smoke is exceeded the control unit immediately signals a visual and an audible alarm. The operational state or the alarm state is also shown by LEDs at the sensors. WATCHDOG GRM can only be reset to its normal condition (no alarm, no fault) when the gas/smoke level has fallen back below the critical level thus providing the user with a high level of safety. The system offers maximum operational reliability and safety and monitors continuously the state of the entire alarm installation and also signals fault conditions such as sensor fault, short circuit or open circuit (between control unit and sensor). The gas and smoke sensors can be installed up to 150m from the control unit. GRM is available in various versions as either a gas or smoke detector or as a combination unit for both, gas and smoke. A voltage-free relay output is provided for additional remote alarms. The WATCHDOG Gas and Smoke Alarm GRM is suitable for use with 230 VAC mains supply and for ambient temperatures ranging from 0°C to 40°C. The GRM system is easy to install, simple to operate and requires only a minimum of maintenance. GRM is for instance used in industry, in public premises, boiler rooms or cellars, storage rooms or offices and in domestic premises.
