Changes on the Endress + Hauser Executive Board

Yokogawa signs strategic partnership and equity agreement with AlgaEnergy to accelerate growth of microalgae biotech sector

AlgaEnergy, a Spanish biotechnology company specialising in the production and commercial applications of microalgae, and Yokogawa Electric Corporation, have announced the signing of a partnership and equity participation agreement. The strategic agreement involves an approximately 10 million euro investment by Yokogawa to acquire newly issued shares of AlgaEnergy, making the Japanese company a reference shareholder.

Microalgae are a diverse group of unicellular photosynthetic micro-organisms that can thrive in a wide variety of aquatic habitats, such as oceans, lakes, and rivers. Their rapid rate of reproduction means they can be utilised effectively as a biological resource. They are recognised as having great potential to contribute to a more sustainable society through applications in diverse sectors ranging from agriculture, food, and animal feed through to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biomaterials and, in the future, sustainable biofuels.

Dr Andreas Mayr assumes additional responsibility on the En- dress+Hauser Group’s Executive Board as Chief Operating Offi cer.

Change is taking place at the top of the Endress+Hauser Group. Effective 1 March 2019, Dr Andreas Mayr will become Chief Operating Offi cer (COO) responsible for sales, production and support, thus assuming more responsibility on the Executive Board. In this function he will serve as deputy CEO to Matthias Altendorf. On 1 October 2018, Jörg Stegert joined the Group to oversee the entire personnel area as Chief Human Resources Offi cer (CHRO).

The impetus behind the reorganisation is the increasing dynamic of digitalisation, the fl uctuating economic and political environment, and last but not least, the sustained growth of the internationally active Group. “We want to continue to actively shape this transformation,” explained Klaus Endress, President of the Supervisory Board. “By bundling the operational responsibility of the Group in the hands of a COO, we can free up more time for the CEO to focus on his activities.”

Matthias Altendorf, who has led the family-owned company since 2014, will focus more intensely on aligning, growing and strengthening the Endress+Hauser Group, as well as further anchoring the corporate culture and values into the global network of companies. Apart from strategy, business development and digitalisation, the CEO will concentrate on further expanding the laboratory analysis business.

Andreas Mayr (57), as Corporate Director of Marketing and Technology, was already a member of the Group’s Executive Board. He holds a doctorate in physics and joined Endress+Hauser in 1998. In his new role, he will focus all of his time and efforts on helping to manage the Group. His successor as CEO of Endress+Hauser SE+Co. KG in Maulburg, Germany – the Group’s center of competence for level and pressure measurement technology – effective 1 January 2019 will be Dr Peter Selders (49), who has been Head of Main Division, Technology to date.

Jörg Stegert joined the Executive Board on 1 October 2018 to head up the Group’s human resources area. The 48-year-old was most recently Head of Human Resources at Knorr-Bremse AG in Munich. There he supported the company at the executive level and oversaw projects in the HR area such as the establishment of international structures and a state-of-the-art IT landscape for HR applications. Jörg Stegert is furthermore familiar with issues related to internal communications and training and education. He replaces Roland Kienzler who left the company to pursue other opportunities.

The Executive Board of the Endress+Hauser Group also includes Dr Manfred Jagiella (Corporate Director, Process Analysis Business), Chief Information Offi cer Pieter de Koning (IT), Chief Sales Offi cer Nikolaus Krüger (sales and service), Chief Financial Offi cer Dr Luc Schultheiss (fi nance) and General Counsel Dr Heiner Zehntner (legal).

AlgaEnergy has been a pioneer in the microalgae biotechnology fi eld since 2007. It is currently operating a commercial production facility in the south of Spain, and, in late 2015, launched the world’s fi rst line-up of microalgae-based biostimulant products to promote effi cient crop cultivation. Biostimulant is a substance or micro-organisms whose function when applied to plants or the surrounding soil is to stimulate natural processes to enhance nutrient uptake, nutrient effi ciency, tolerance to abiotic stress, and crop quality.

The entry of Yokogawa as a shareholder will enable AlgaEnergy to reinforce its position of international leadership, with the equity investment being used to fund a set of ambitious projects, including international expansion of its biostimulant product sales organisation, entry into new sectors such as food and cosmetics, and development of its promising product pipeline.

However, the scope of the agreement extends beyond just fi nancial investment. The two companies, which share strong synergies and a common vision, seek to build an industry-leading partnership in the microalgae biotechnology sector worldwide by collaborating in the areas of R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and sales. AlgaEnergy will leverage its broad knowledge and experience in the microalgae biological processes, accumulated throughout more than four decades of R&D by its scientifi c leader, the world-renowned microbiologist Professor Miguel Garcia Guerrero of the University of Seville. Yokogawa will provide the advanced technologies and knowhow related to automation of industrial processes that will be key to maximising quality and effi ciency as production volumes increase.

Augusto Rodríguez-Villa, AlgaEnergy’s president, highlighted that, “This agreement is the best possible partnership in the journey to achieve our mission to leverage the potential of microalgae worldwide. We share the same vision for the future, the belief that more sustainable development is possible and that microalgae can be a key contributor towards that objective.”

Tsuyoshi Abe, senior vice president and head of the Marketing Headquarters at Yokogawa, added, “Yokogawa aims to contribute directly to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals through its core business activities, and this year we established a new Life Innovation business unit in line with that. This is our fi rst serious foray into clean technology in the bioeconomy, which was recently added as a new focus area in our long-term business framework, so we have high expectations for this exciting strategic partnership.”

Exhibitor registrations for NEFTEGAZ have been in full swing for months now. Household names from Russia such as TRANSNEFT PSJC, Tatneft PSJC, NKMZ-Group LTD., Chelpipe Group and MTK Group, from Germany such as VEGA Grieshaber KG and KANEX Krohne-Anlagen-Export GmbH or from China such as RG Petro Machinery Group Co. Ltd., Yantei Jereh Oilfi eld Services Group Co. Ltd. and NEWAY VALVE Co. Ltd. have already confi rmed their participation. NEFTEGAZ 2018 saw 552 exhibitors from 27 countries showcase their product highlights. The event was attended by some 22,550 trade visitors – including 40% fi rst-time visitors and 93% experts.

The growth experienced in the Russian oil and gas sectors as well as the outstanding economic standing of Russia’s energy economy are excellent conditions for NEFTEGAZ 2019. The trade fair provides international enterprises with access to attractive markets as well as with a ideal business platform for networking, exchange of experiences with sector experts and gathering information on new technologies as well as state-of-the-art equipment for the oil and gas industry. 70% of Russia’s exports are accounted for by the energy sector. Some 11.2 million barrels are produced in Russia per day (bpd); this corresponds to a total of 12.2% of global production. 8.6 million bpd (12.7% of global production) go into exports. From January to April 2018 German-Russian foreign trade rose by a total of 23%. Germany and Russia are already speaking of a “Digitalisation à la russe” and announcing joint ventures. The increasingly strong economic relations between Germany and Russia are also evidenced by the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2, through which Russian natural gas is to fl ow from St. Petersburg to the German coast from November next year.

2019 will again see Messe Düsseldorf organise a German Pavilion. Participating companies profi t from attractive special terms and conditions. Furthermore, “Made in Germany” enjoys an excellent reputation in the Russian industry – reason enough for many exhibitors to fl y the German fl ag. The corporate joint pavilion will be supported by the German Engineering Federation (Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagen – VDMA).

NEFTEGAZ 2019 is organised by Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, Messe Düsseldorf Moscow OOO and their local partner AO EXPOCENTRE. Held in parallel with NEFTEGAZ at the centrally located fairgrounds will be the National Oil & Gas Forum as well as the ELEKTRO trade fair. These three industry highlights held in one place provide trade visitors with valuable synergies and opportunities to network with experts from business and political circles. The organiser of the Oil & Gas Forum – acting as a patron of NEFTEGAZ at the same time – is the Russian Energy Ministry. Offi cial support for the trade fair also comes care of the Russian Ministry for Industry and Commerce as well as of the Russian Chamber of Foreign Trade.
