New Technology for Analyzing Difficult Industrial Process Water Samples
New technology from GE (USA) will make it easier for the water process industry to analyze difficult industrial water samples. Expanding GE’s capabilities for process, environmental and wastewater analysis, the Sievers InnovOx On-Line Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyser will allow users to analyze challenging water samples on a routine basis without requiring excessive preventive maintenance. Monitoring the levels of TOC in the water is an important step for industrial users to control processes that are critical to their operations and to comply with regulations. The Sievers InnovOx offers increased uptime and instrument reliability, two important features when it comes to analyzing difficult industrial samples. It has been designed by GE Power & Water’s analytical instruments unit for the petrochemical, petroleum, pulp and paper and food and beverage markets, as well as environmental organisations and municipalities.
The InnovOx On-Line, like its InnovOx Laboratory model predecessor, uses an innovative Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) technique that offers enhanced reliability, greater ease of use and lower maintenance than other TOC analysers available today. By utilising SCWO, the InnovOx is the TOC instrument most capable of cost effectively analyzing difficult industrial process, environmental and wastewater samples on a routine basis. SCWO has historically been used to treat large volumes of aqueous waste streams, sludges and contaminated soils. GE is the first company to use this technique in a commercially available TOC analyser. The first commercial application for the new InnovOx On-Line TOC Analyser is monitoring seawater in Taiwan. The seawater, which contains about 3 percent sodium chloride, is used as industrial process water, and both incoming and outgoing water streams need to be monitored for environmental protection. One of the main sources of contamination can be hydrocarbons coming from a petrochemical refining process. The InnovOx's robust handling of the brine sample was a significant factor in the analyzer's selection.
“The TOC market demanded technology with greater reliability and uptime, two critical needs that were not being met,” said Stephen Poirier, vice president of business development for the analytical instruments unit of GE Power & Water. “Our patent-pending InnovOx technology offers increased uptime and instrument reliability and handles tough samples easily.”

Soot Levels Measured in Diesel Engine Engine Oils in Under 30 Seconds Without Sample Preparation
Extended drain times, combined with stringent emission requirements, make it important to routinely check the soot levels in diesel engine oil. Rapid, on-site field measurement of soot concentration levels in diesel engine lubricating oils at levels as high as 12 - 15% takes less than 30 seconds with the InfraCal Soot Meter from Wilks Enterprise, Inc. (USA). This compact, pushbutton analyser provides direct readout of the percent of suspended carbon (soot) in diesel engine lubricating oils without any sample preparation or dilution – no solvents or messy transmission cells to clean.
Since the InfraCal Soot Meter was specifically designed for easy, on-site testing, it represents a major time savings from the widely-used and accepted thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and FT-IR methods that are impractical as field analysis methods. The measurement data obtained from the Soot Meter will correlate to TGA and FT-IR analysis techniques with several distinct advantages. Analysis time with the InfraCal Soot Meter is less than 30 seconds per sample with direct readout of soot levels as high as 12 – 15% without sample dilution or transmission cells to clean. It is significantly lower in cost and one step, pushbutton operation makes it easy to use with minimal operator training.
A rugged, no-moving parts design ensures years of virtually maintenance-free operation with the InfraCal Soot
Meter. Weighing less than 5 lbs., it operates off 12 volt d.c. power and is ideal for use along side diesel engines for onsite, field measurements, in the used oil/engine testing laboratory, at power generation stations, or for truck, bus, and off- highway equipment fleets. The InfraCal Soot Meter is Ideal for use on all types of diesel lubricating oils and engines.

Infrared Temperature Sensor Offers Simple, Accurate Measurement
If accurate temperature measurement and easy operation are critical to your process, the Modline 5 from ITM Instruments (Canada) has the features to respond to your needs.
Target sighting is precise and easy – two built-in, thru- the-lens options are available: Visual or Laser. Users adjust focus by turning the rear portion of the sensor, which can be locked into position. With the built-in Laser Sighting option, the size of the laser spot represents the detection area or “spot” size.
The System Health Check, calibration check and other smart features will automatically detect that it is performing correctly, or let you know when it is not.
2-colour dual detector models are available for handling tough temperature measurement jobs.
This unit is designed to withstand long terms in harsh environments, all components of the sensor are contained within a sealed, stainless steel NEMA 4 (IP65) enclosure.

Dominion Choose Unique Portable Gas Trans-fill System
The Cermet II I.S hygrometer from Michell Instruments (UK) is an integral part of a new portable gas filling plant, developed by Dominion Gas. The Portable Gas Trans-fill System (PGTS) operates both on - and off-shore in the harshest of environments. It is thought to be the first system of its kind.
Dominion has a long history of using the Cermet II I.S, which made it a natural choice for the PGTS. The company has used the instrument in a variety of applications over a number of years, such as the monitoring of welding mixes, CNG and natural gas, in both process and storage applications.
Designed for the measurement of the moisture content of flammable and non-flammable gases within hazardous areas, the Cermet II I.S. comprises an intrinsically safe transmitter, Transmet I.S., and a safe area Control Unit. Housed in a stainless steel case, the Transmet I.S. transmitter offers ingress protection to IP66 (NEMA 4X).
The Control Unit is a 19" sub rack unit containing display, transmitter power supply and isolation barriers suitable for location in a designated safe area. It provides all necessary user interfacing, including multi- unit display, alarms, analogue and digital outputs. Control unit and transmitter are connected by up to 500m of cable via galvanic isolation barriers.
The Cermet II I.S is one of a wide range of dew-point and moisture measurement instruments and analysers manufactured by Michell Instruments. It is easy to install and self-contained; making it ideal for use in applications like the PGTS.
