Dr Monika M. Dittmann: Winner of the 2012 Chromatographic Society Jubilee Medal
Dr Monika M. Dittmann of Agilent Technologies GmbH (Waldbrönn, Germany) has been awarded the 2012 Chromatographic Society Jubilee Medal for her important and sustained contribution to the development and promotion of separation science in Europe.
The Jubilee medal was instituted in 1982 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Society and has a prestigious history of separation scientists associated with it. The medal is awarded to up-and- coming separation scientists, those who have made major use of separation science in their own field or to scientists who have made meritorious contributions to a particular area of separation science.
Dr Dittmann’s strong presence over a range of topics in the peer- reviewed scientific literature and prominence as speaker at international separation science meetings was a key aspect in her recognition by The Society. Her work in the areas of capillary electrophoresis and electrochromatography, her research in understanding chromatographic performance and more recently her work on chip-based electrophoretic and chromatographic separations were all noted. Additionally, her support of academic research in Europe was recognised by the committee through this award.
Dr Dittmann obtained her PhD under the supervision of Professor Wolfgang Riepe at the University of Paderborn in Germany. The title of her thesis was ‘Experimental Studies on Extraction of Coal-Oil Model Mixtures with Supercritical Gases’. Upon completion of her doctorate, Dr Dittmann moved to the University of California, Berkeley where she held a position as a postdoctoral fellow in Professor John M. Prausnitz’s group funded by a Feodor-Lynen
fellowship from the Alexander-von- Humboldt Stiftung.
Dr Dittmann then returned to Germany joining Hewlett Packard in 1988 as a Research and
Development scientist (now the Liquid Phase Separation Division of Agilent Technologies). In her career with Agilent she has held positions in both research and project management focussing on the development of chromatographic, electrophoretic (including capillary electrochromatography) and more recently lab-on-a-chip technologies. Dr Dittmann has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. She also holds 5 patents relating to the development of capillary and microfluidic separation systems.
She becomes the third recipient from Agilent Technologies to be recognised by The Chromatographic Society with Dr Jack Kirkland receiving the Martin medal in 1997 and Dr Ron Majors receiving the same award in 2007. It is anticipated Dr Dittmann will be formally presented with the Jubilee medal at HPLC 2012 in Anaheim, California.
