New Process for the Production of Uniform Particle Size Chromatography Resin Beads Announced

Purolite has announced its patented continuous process – Jetting - for the production of uniform particle size chromatography resins using two propriety manufacturing processes.

For liquid chromatography (size exclusion chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, reversed phase chromatography, solid phase extraction, and affinity chromatography) it is preferable to have uniform particle size beads to provide improved kinetics, resolution, performance consistency and superior packing properties.

Classic batch emulsion polymerisation is a robust, proven technology which results in a relatively broad (Gaussian)

particle size distribution. Jetting, however, is a continuous, direct manufacturing process for chromatographic resin beads with a narrow particle size distribution, resulting in higher yields and superior economics. Jetting allows for chromatographic resins to be produced relatively quickly in small or large quantities (>1000Kg) as required. The availability of consistent supplies of large volumes of chromatographic resin beads also opens up the possibility of new potential larger scale applications.

The first Purolite jetting process - membrane or ‘can’ jetting - entails using a membrane with very small, discrete orifices, through which the polymer is passed. This device is capable of producing uniform particle size chromatographic resins from ~15 to 250 micron.

The second process, plate jetting, utilises a plate with many precisely engineered holes, through which the resin polymer is passed. Uniform particle size chromatographic resins of ~150 µm to >1000µm can be produced using this method.
