A vision of the paper mill of the future from ABB

A

BB’s European Pulp and Paper Tour was launched in June during Zellcheming, the virtual

event organised by the European Pulp & Paper Industry Association. The interactive experience

offered papermakers an opportunity to experience a fully-automated, optimised and connected mill setting, complete with laboratory, operator, and paper machine environments aboard a custom-designed truck. A virtual tour is currently an option, with ABB offering customers the chance to have the experience physically at their mills or facilities across Europe as Covid-19 restrictions allow. Customers were provided with a glimpse of ABB’s vision of the paper mill of the future and experienced the latest solutions and insights that will help them to operate their mills to the highest quality standards.

ABB’s fully-automated, optimised and connected mill setting aboard a custom-designed truck “This is a seminal moment for

the pulp and paper industry. Now more than ever, it is imperative that papermakers look to maximise output of the highest quality

and increase productivity in the most cost-effective manner,” said Joachim Braun, president of process industries at ABB. “Our virtual and in-person tours

emulate a real mill setting in a way that has never been done before, showcasing not only the innovations that ABB can offer now, but also in the future.”

Working towards pulp production with zero emissions and waste

A programme that will enable pulp mills to achieve maximum output sustainably while aiming for zero emissions and waste production has been launched by Andritz. CircleToZero is described as a holistic means to help the industry to either eliminate or make use of side streams in pulp production and convert by- products into new added-value products. It pairs in-house innovations

July/August 2021

with Andritz technologies with the goal of providing strong support to customers in their efforts to achieve the highest, sustainable output without waste. The already-established Andritz

A-Recovery+ programme is a major part of CircleToZero. This exploits the economic potential of the many often-unused side streams found in the recovery island of chemical pulp mills. These include purifying raw methanol into commercial

quality bio-methanol, on-site production of sulphuric acid, and recovery of kraft lignin. Andritz is already helping Södra

Cell’s Mönsterås pulp mill to become the world’s first fossil- free biomethanol plant and also to be ‘climate-positive’ by the end of this decade. CircleToZero is said to enable

customers to achieve immediate bottom-line savings, take up new business and investment opportunities and increase their

ability to comply with ever tighter environmental regulations. Lauri Pehu-Lehtonen, director

of A-Recovery+ at Andritz, said: “We look forward to a shared roadmap towards a more sustainable society together with our business partners. Our CircleToZero team is happy to share the programme and solutions in detail and define new ways to operate mills in more sustainable ways with enhanced bottom-line results.”
