News Vaccine hero

VOLUNTEERS from Kings Hill and Malling Rotary Clubs have been marshalling throughout 2021 in support of staff delivering the COVID-19 vaccination programme in Leybourne. The Rotary members have pro-

vided over 650 hours to help the surgery team at the Avicenna Med- ical Centre deliver over 50,000 jabs. Neil Cornford, a Kings Hill Ro-

tarian, has been co-ordinating the marshalling. Now he has been recognised as a lockdown hero by the local Brewers Fayre pub, Cas- tle Lake, which rewarded him with a voucher for a meal.

Legends match CRICKET legends John Embury,

Gordon Greenidge and Devon Malcolm are part of the Lashings World XI playing at Leeds on July 30.

The free-to-enter match at the Burberry Lane ground will raise funds for the Leeds and Broom- field Cricket Club's youth system. The fixture starts at 2.30pm and there is a bar, barbecue and ice creams. Go to www.leedsandb- roomfieldcc.com for details.

Work begins on Lidl store despite concern

CONSTRUCTION has now begun on a controversial super- market in Ditton.

The Lidl store, based on the Kia garage site in London Road, was granted permission last summer. The supermarket, expected to take around 10 months to build, will sit between Bradbourne Lane and A20 London Road. Temporary traffic lights will re- main in place until August 28 at the Bradbourne Lane junction to reconfigure the site entrance. A Lidl spokesman said: “The works will also include the instal- lation of a signalised crossing to London Road as well as a new pavement on Bradbourne Lane, on the side closest to the new store. We would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this time. “The build is expected to take 10 months, with a view to opening

the store in autumn 2021.” The store will have solar panels and feature an in-store bakery, customer toilets and two electric vehicle charging spaces. Concerns were raised by several councillors and residents last year over parking and congestion in the area. Lidl GB’s regional head of prop- Adam Forsdick, said:

erty,

“There’s been much anticipation for this new Lidl store and it’s

great that we are now in a position to start construction. “We are extremely grateful for

all the support we have received so far and would like to thank ev- eryone for their patience and un- derstanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.” Once completed, the supermar-

ket is expected to open seven days a week, from 8am to 10pm Mon- day to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays.
