Plan to open all libraries

ALL of Kent’s 99 libraries will re- open their doors to the public next month, it has been revealed. Kent County Council (KCC) has announced the intended route out of lockdown for some of its com- munity services, with more than half of its libraries still shut. Members were told that the 56 closed libraries will re-instate full services in the middle of August as restrictions continue to ease. Cllr Mike Hill (Con), KCC’s cabi-

net member for communities, said he hopes to re-open them in August, even if social distancing rules are not lifted on July 19. He added: “If we have another ex- tension, I will open all libraries re- gardless. It will mean we have to open in a COVID-safe environment and it may take a little longer, but we won’t miss that mid-August date by much.”

About 43 Kent libraries are now

open, including some based in Ash- ford, Dartford, Dover, Folkestone, Gravesend, Sevenoaks, Swale and Tonbridge. Visitors are allowed to browse bookshelves and computers, with study spaces also re-opened and so- cial distancing encouraged. It comes amid a “rollercoaster ride” of closing and opening li- braries over the last 18 months, as KCC aims to keep community ser- vices running while also protecting public health. Sir Paul Carter (Con), who is the chair of KCC’s growth, economic development and communities committee, said earlier today: “I to- tally support and endorse this. It will be great to see all libraries re- open again.” A future report reviewing all Kent libraries will be presented to the committee, with the next meeting scheduled for September 24.

School earns award

THE Malling School (TMS) is one of the few schools in the country to be awarded the School of Char- acter Kitemark Plus Award. It recognises the quality of char-

acter development for all mem- bers of the school. Chair of the Association of Char-

acter Education, Gary Lewis, said staff were consistent and confi- dent in describing the many as- pects of the school’s provision. Mr Lewis said: “My sincere con-

gratulations are extended to you, your students and governors’ school community and the mutu- ally respectful relationships and evolving communication systems that are permitting the school to meet all challenges with confi- dence and competence. “It was apparent that significant

progress has been made since the last assessment visit.” Head teacher John Vennart is pictured with pupils at the school.
