Buses brought in as rail cutting repaired
BUSES will replace trains be- tween Maidstone East and Ash- ford International stations while engineering work is carried out to prevent landslips at Bearsted. The replacement service will run from Saturday, August 7 to Sun- day, August 15.
Network Rail engineers will be reinforcing Bearsted cutting to im- prove drainage and signalling in the area.
Rail bosses say the extreme
weather is having a “significant impact” on the Victorian railway embankments. A Network Rail spokesman said: “This will help to deliver better, more reliable journeys. Line clo- sures are always a last resort. “In the past decade alone, there
have been several occurrences of unplanned disruption as engineers have been sent to the Bearsted cut- ting site to urgently fix weather- related earth movements.
to return for emergency work. “Drainage improvements will
also help reduce or prevent the risk of flooding elsewhere on the line.” The work was originally sup-
posed to take place over multiple weekends, but Network Rail felt this would have meant more dis- ruption to both passengers and local residents. More than 2,000 soil nails will be installed into a section of the cut- ting at Bearsted, as well as sig- nalling power maintenance work. Power feeder renewals will also
be installed at Hollingbourne, Har- rietsham, and Charing.
“New Year’s Day 2021 was the most recent landslip due to heavy rain in the area. “This nine-day blockade in Au- gust means engineers can get in to strengthen the cutting, making it secure for a lifetime, with no need
Lenham station will undergo earthworks drainage, track drainage, and signalling power work.
Network Rail say the closures
have been “carefully planned” in line with the summer holidays, when passenger numbers are lower.
Match tribute A FOOTBALL match is being
held in memory of Reece Watson at Gallagher Stadium. Reece (22), above, who man-
aged the under-15s for Lenham Wanderers FC, died in a crash on the M26 near Wrotham last Octo- ber. David Boaler (44) also died following the collision. The match will take place on July 30 at 6.30pm.
