‘Staycation summer’ to help castle rell coffers

THE chief executive of Leeds Cas- tle has highlighted the importance of a "staycation" summer to help the treasure house refill the kitty. Months of closures last year and recent restricted opening "wrought significant damage" on the fi- nances, said Helen Bonser-Wilton. Mrs Bonser-Wilton started work in March, having succeeded Sir David Steel who departed to be- come the Governor of Gibraltar. Writing in the Leeds and Broom- field parish newsletter, she said 2021 "will remain challenging". She added: "Complete closure

for three months last year wrought significant damage on finances and we don't expect more than 60% of usual revenue this year, due to ca- pacity restrictions. "As an independent charity, the castle is dependent on visitor in- come to generate enough revenue to care for the castle, collection and

estate. We hope for a busy stayca- tion summer to start rebuilding and moving forward." Mrs Bonser-Wilton takes charge after a successful five-year spell as chief executive at the Mary Rose in Portsmouth where she led the building of a much-acclaimed mu- seum as well making it financially sustainable.

Before that, she was operation

director at the National Trust in the south west of England. She adds: “I am looking forward to the challenges at the castle, where I will be developing and leading the delivery of our new 10 year strategy, in partnership with our board of trustees.

“The estate is a stunning place

and we have huge opportunities to make the experience even better.”
