Store help? CHART Sutton village shop is


looking for volunteers to help run it. The store is open from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am to noon on weekends. Most volunteers do two-hour stints. If you are interested call Valerie on 843232 or Jane on 843743 for an informal chat.

THE Friars Summer Fayre will take place on June 27. The event will run from

Imam ‘so grateful’ for donations to mosque


A WORSHIP leader is “deeply moved” by the number of dona- tions collected for the new Maid- stone mosque.


Imam Dr Muhammed Usmani


delivered a heartfelt plea on social media last month for £150,000, after COVID-19 expenses and delays in the design process raised the cost of the building to £1.2million. He said when the old Mote Road mosque was demolished two and a half years ago, the cost of rebuilding was budgeted for just £1million “and no more”.


Dr Usmani, pictured right with worshipper Arshad Mahmood dur- ing construction, said: “We are at a halfway point, we need about an- other £80,000 to reach our target, but everyone has been so kind and gen- erous and we are so grateful.” He said the pandemic had put a hold on certain materials being de- livered but a late May opening is still

“COVID-19 hit the world and then we continued our project and we are finally reaching completion. The pandemic definitely raised the prices of materials. “We thank worshipers and com- munity members for their patience and cooperation. It has not been easy but I do think it has been worth it.”
