West Malling: A lot to brag about

For a small town, West Malling has a lot to brag about.

Steeped in history, surrounded by the best of Kentish countryside, and boasting a quintessential range of independent shops, it’s where an historic past meets a contemporary present. A community of Benedictine nuns was founded here in the 11th century and the town features a wealth of ancient buildings including the town’s most famous landmark, The Cascades waterfall. An eclectic mix of old and new housing combined with a thriving business community have consistently made the town one of the most sought-after places to live in the south-east. An outstanding array of extraordinary individuals are commemorated with blue plaques throughout the borough. Author George Orwell and artist JMW Turner, both found inspiration for their work here, and legendary pop group, The Beatles, filmed part of their 1967 movie ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ here. Bars, pubs and restaurants boast award winning fayre, whether you seek a slice of cake or a five-course meal. Those in need of retail therapy will find succour within the abundant shops lining the historic high street. Fashion boutiques, jewellers, shoe specialists, and a flourishing monthly farmer’s market regularly draw the crowds. And Abbey Arcade is a treasure trove of independent stalls.

‘The Malling School Way’ Caring, Determined, Reflective

The Malling School History

The Malling School’s bright modern buildings sit in beautiful parkland. Renowned for a caring and family ethos, its history goes back to 1957 when it opened as Clare Park Secondary School.

The first head teacher was Mr Pape, who presided over a small school consisting of a single building. Another was soon added, and Clare Park welcomed pupils for three decades.

In November 1990, under the Headship of Mrs V Dagger, we became The Malling School. In 2005, the old school was knocked down, and reopened in September 2007 with smart new buildings – named Russet, Bramley and Tydeman to reflect the local apple orchards. The school was officially opened on 30th April 2008 by the then Rt Hon Ed Balls MP.

The Malling School is now led by Mr J Vennart and is going from strength to strength.
