Rural Maidstone road on UK ‘danger‘ listing
NEW figures have revealed Maid- stone is home to one of the most dangerous rural roads in the UK. The A229 gained the top spot for most unsafe, whilst the A2 and A249 were both included in the top 10 most hazardous highways in the country according to AA Charita- ble Trust.
The charity is calling for learners to take driving lessons on rural roads, as new research revealed that seven in 10 fatal crashes in- volving young motorists hap- pened in the countryside. Rural roads are defined as non-
motorway roads away from areas with a population of under 10,000. An interactive map has been re-
leased showing July, August, Octo- ber, and November appear to be the most concerning months for crashes.
Research conducted by the char-
itable trust, which analysed more than 70,000 young driver crashes
over a six-year period, shows 71% of fatal car crashes involving young drivers take place on rural roads. The data also shows a pro- portion of crashes involving young drivers which are on Sundays is 9% higher on rural roads than on urban roads. Edmund King, direc- tor of the AA Charitable Trust, said: “Many young drivers, and in- deed parents, are unaware that rural roads are potentially much more dangerous than motorways

or urban roads. Our data clearly shows that the rural road risk is highest for the youngest drivers on our roads and decreases with each year of age. This is a clear sign that greater education and exposure to rural roads helps alleviate the risks they pose.” Mr King added that this research “is just the first stage” in the trust’s ongoing safety campaign aimed at targeting young rural drivers.
