Clarity, pronunciation and audibility

Elementary 3 marks
Mostly hesitant. Little understandin g of the text.
Hesitates over many words. Mispronoun- ces a number of words. Difficult to hear.
Very occasional brief eye contact with the audience.
Tone and register
No varied use of tone or change in register.
Very little varied use of tone or change in register.
3 Moderate 4 marks
Hesitant in part. Some understanding of parts of the text.
Some hesitation and mispronounced words. Voice drops in places.
4 Adequate 5 marks
Confident in part. Understands most of the text.
Reasonably fluent but some mispronoun- ced words. Reads loudly enough.
Some attempt at eye contact with the audience.
Inappropriate change in tone or register.
Reasonable eye contact with the audience.
Some attempt to change tone and register.
5 Substantial 6 marks
Mostly confident. Understands most of the text.
Fluent for the most part. Some mispronunciation of difficult words. Reads loudly enough.
6 Meritorious 7 marks
Confident. Understand s most of the text.
Mostly fluent with confident pronunciat- ion of nearly all words. Projects voice well.
Good eye contact with the audience at times.
Good eye contact with the audience most of the time.
Appropriate change in tone and register when applied.
Good use of tone and change in register in most places as required by the text.
7 Outstanding 8–10 marks
Very confident. Shows understanding of complete text.
Very fluent. Pronounces all words well. Projects voice well.
Natural and confident eye contact with the audience throughout.
Natural changes in tone and register applied consistently as required by the text.
