WELSH WONDERS TAKE A TRIP OVER THE BORDER
Not abroad but as good as. Just across the Welsh border, Welsh Rarebits Hotels of Distinction offer nearly 30 independently owned hotels spread across Wales coast and countryside. Choose from country house hotels, boutique boltholes and romantic retreats to relaxing spas and historic inns as well as tasty restaurants with rooms, all offering great Welsh hospitality, fine food and a personal welcome. Forget Route 66, why not combine a few of these hotels for a mini-Welsh tour.
To help you decide where to stay, Rarebits has divided their collection into three regions - north, mid and south Wales, each with lots to offer.
One of those in the northern area is Penmaenuchaf Hall at Dolgellau - a great base to explore the outstanding natural beauty of the Snowdonia National Park. Penmaenuchaf Hall is a country house hotel that combines the best of contemporary accommodation and classic charm alongside acclaimed dining.

For some French style opulence, cross over the Menai Strait to increasingly-popular Anglesey and stay in Grade II listed Château Rhianfa (Left). Inspired by the châteaux of the Loire Valley, it was built by Sir John Hay-Williams for his wife and daughters between 1849 and 1851. Take your pick from chateau rooms or a lodge or cottage suites.
In mid-Wales there is the well-known Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa with its mesmerising lake view. The hotel is steeped in history, first built in 1890 and with several additions, it has also served as a boys’ boarding school in the war years as well as housing allied soldiers and even the deposed King of Siam. The area is a designated nature reserve so lots of opportunity for country walks and there is also fly fishing on the lake, clay pigeon shooting and a chance to relax in the spa.
The lovely boutique hotel, the Grade II listed, Harbourmaster in Aberaeron, is a popular choice, offering 13 rooms spread over three historic harbour side buildings. Renovated in 2001, it is contemporary and chic and a perfect coastal retreat.
