Bringing 110 per cent effort to every- thing she does, whether it's in sports, school or volunteer efforts, Retzler does so with a joyous attitude and lots of passion.


While a painful injury left her unable


to compete in the sports she loves, instead of feeling sorry for herself, she instead jumped at the opportunity to volunteer to coach and mentor younger players. “Instead of giving up or getting down, she threw her- self into understanding the game on a deeper level. Shenise quickly decided that she would help me coach the junior high volleyball team and without asking, Shenise would come up with practice plans and offer a suggestion for how to improve these young players,” said Nicole Meier,Vauxhall High School teacher and junior high volleyball coach.“She is the first one to smile at her classmates and teachers, the first one to volunteer when her teachers need something and gen- uinely one of the most caring students I’ve ever met.”

takes the utmost pride in being pre- pared to the best of her ability in any situation she is presented with. She also isn’t afraid to give back to


the community and she often puts other first,often at the expense of her own time and commitments. She has volunteered for the Headstrong Program at VHS which identifies and works with student lead- ers to promote inclusion and reduce


stigma around mental health issues. She has also been an invaluable emotional support


for friends and peers alike. Bringing a positive and supportive mentality within the school walls has been to the benefit of the community. “To say Shenise is a resilient teenager is an under-


statement. I never once heard an excuse or heard her complain, whine, or even take a negative tone on a subject,”said Joel Blake,VHS teacher.“Shenise chooses to focus on the positives in the world around her and makes the most of any situation she is placed in. Shenise is a natural leader who sets positive examples for the people in her life.”
