W.R.Myers.“She was a part of the mentor program at
W.R.Myers for two years where she worked with students from Dr.Hamman Elementary School providing support for students with social challenges. She is content to work quietly behind the scenes to help peers achieve success and to create a welcoming environment for our student body.” On top of that, she’s also a highly-skilled golfer, com- peting both provincially and nationally. 2019 Myers team to the South Zone Curling Zone championship and she’s also a respected hockey referee who was recognized at the Most Promising Referee in 2019 by Taber Minor Hockey. Described as “kind, patient, persistent and humble”,Makarchuk brings profes- sionalism to all aspects, whether it be in the classroom, in the community or when competing. Her ability to encourage and inspire those around her is not a quality every- one possesses, but those who know Makarchuk have experienced her drive to make others better.
“I have seen this encouraging quality as she has helped other students out with homework and speak- ing kind, thankful words to her
teachers. This school year has been especially challenging to students and often words of negativity and frustration have been shared to me by students. I can honestly say I have never heard Alanna contribute to any negativity in the classroom and she continually finds ways to 'lighten' the class atmosphere,”said Janae Haslam, math/physics teacher at Myers.“It has been a joy to teach Alanna and I know she is very deserving of an APEX award.” Heading into the next school year,Makarchuk has
her eyes set on majoring in computer engineering. With a scholarship in place to attend Lawrence
Technological University in Midfield,Michigan, Makarchuk will also be a major player for their golf team.
