Naturepedic Renews Its Commitment With MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certification Program By Chris Schriever
Naturepedic recently announced that its full range of products has been renewed as cer- tified nontoxic by MADE SAFE. A nontoxic certification that applies to every day prod- ucts, the MADE SAFE seal indicates that the item is made with safe ingredients not known or suspected to harm human health, animals or ecosystems—a key selling point for many conscious consumers. Following a rigorous and scientific certifica- tion process, products that have been certified MADE SAFE have been thoroughly examined by researchers, scientists and discipline-spe- cific experts to ensure they are made without known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, devel- opmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents or harmful VOCs. Ingredients are then further examined for bioaccumulation (builds up in our bodies), persistence (builds up in the environ- ment), general ecosystem harm, as well as for aquatic and animal toxicity.
“It’s very important that consumers can look for the MADE SAFE nontoxic certifica- tion seal so they can be confident about the safety of the products they purchase,” said Barry A. Cik, board-certified environmental engineer, founder and technical director of Naturepedic. “But Naturepedic even goes beyond the MADE SAFE standards.” Naturepedic’s rigorous commitment to health
and safety extends to its juvenile sleep products as well. When it comes to baby crib mattresses, the company doesn’t just take into account the need for chemical safety, it also considers aller- genic and hygienic safety—which means avoid- ing specific materials and components. “Approximately 6–8% of people, including babies, are allergic to latex, so the only respon- sible course of action is to keep them away from it,” Cik explained. “Avoiding latex includes avoiding coir (shredded coconut husks), which is always mixed with latex. No latex, even if or-

ganic, is ever used in our Naturepedic organic baby crib mattresses or other baby products.” Hygienic safety is vitally important too, be- cause a baby mattress is expected to last for years. Naturepedic waterproofs all of its baby mattresses to protect them from contamina- tion from bodily fluids and spills. And rather than using toxic chemicals or plastics to do so, the company opts for polyethylene—which has been deemed by the Clean Production Action organization as the safest plastic. Tak- ing it a step further, Naturepedic uses non- GMO sugarcane to make its polyethylene, meeting the FDA standard for food-contact. In addition to MADE SAFE, all Naturepedic mattress and bedding products are certified organic by GOTS and certified to the Green- guard Gold and UL Formaldehyde-Free stan- dards. The company eliminates many of the materials and chemicals found in most con- ventional mattresses, such as flame-retardant chemicals and chemical flame barriers, vinyl, formaldehyde, polyurethane foam, pesticides and glues/adhesives.
