DECEMBER 2020 THE RIDER /17

The Emick Family

By Bruce Ionson. Those of you around the Ontario

Quarter Horse world in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s will certainly re- member the Emick Family. Peter and Iris Emick began their quarter horse lives in the late 1960s. Copperhill Farm was the original home farm near Copetown. The early years featured

stallions Ol Sol and then Otoe’s Gold- enrod (OQHA Hall of Fame 2006). Successes came early. Winning at Quarterama, an AQHA High Point Junior Trail 1973, Canada’s first AQHA World Champion (1974 Junior Trail), countless provincial year end awards and successful breeding pro- grams. The Otoe’s Goldenrod blood- line has produced AQHA Supreme

Champions, AQHA Champions and countless Superior and Registers of Merit for Open, Youth and Amateur. Peter continued involvement in the horse industry as a WHA Senior Judge for many years. He was also active in the Ancaster Fair Horse Shows over the last 15 years and was saluted by the RCMP Musical Ride for his al- most 70 year involvement with the Ancaster Fair. Peter and Iris are no longer active

in the Quarter Horse industry and have retired to a farm, outside Brantford, that has been in the family for over 180 years. Iris is active

on Facebook and loves to keep in touch with family and friends through social media. Peter and Iris’s daugh-

ter, Lori, became a staple in

the quarter horse world. Early photos show Lori at Quarterama in 1976 (Photo – Globe and Mail). Lori quickly rose through the competition ranks and was the All Around Canadian Youth at Quarterama 3 years in a row while still in the 13 and under category. Lori’s successes

continued

throughout the 14 – 18 years and were not limited to On- tario. For a number of years, Lori was winning high point awards in both Ontario AND New York State. Lori also represented Ontario at the AQHA Congress (Photo) and on the Canadian Youth Team for the 1986 World Cup (Melbourne Australia) where she won the World Cup in Horse- manship. After graduating from

Carlton University, Lori stepped away from the quar- ter horse world and began her career as a police officer. Lori has been with the Niagara Re- gional Police Serv- ice since the early 1990s and has taken on a number of roles within the service. She cur- rently resides in the Niagara Region and spends a great deal of time at the farm of Anne and Don Lobsinger, walking dogs and enjoying the coun- try life. Lori’s

trailer, horses, and tack all ready to go. Many of you might remember him stand- ing at the gate with a brush, rag, hoof pick or spray at the ready for any last minute fixes for anyone who needed it. Craig stepped away

from quarter horses to at- tend university in the mid 1980s. Craig met his wife, Joan, at university and even- tually Peter and Iris’s grand- daughters came along. Sara and Jackie have kept their aunt and grandparents busy over the years. Lori, Anne and Iris did put their Quarter Horse experiences to good use a few years ago. They spent a great deal of time and effort trying to convince Craig’s daughters to take up showing horses with partial success. Both girls proudly showed Anne and Don’s horses at the Ancaster Sad- dle Club following in Lori’s footsteps winning numerous year end awards. Sara won the Ancaster Fair and CNE Competitions and is the reigning CNE Ambassador of the Fairs. Jackie is the current president of the Toronto Chapter of the Alpha Gamma Delta Soror- ity. Joan is a recently retired teacher and Craig continues his career with the City of Mississauga. Craig, Joan and the

girls live in Mississauga and spend a great deal of time at “grandma and papa’s farm”.
