The

New Century Singers of Bovey Tracey

A year of celebration

AFTER a special year for The New Century Singers of Bovey Tracey – the singers celebrated their 20th year of singing in the town – they have a great year lined up for 2020. Formed in 1999 from a local

advert, the group gave their first performance in June of that year with only eight weeks of rehearsal. The police choir, who were

giving a concert at the time, graciously allowed them to sing in the interval and marked a renewal of singing in the town and took the name, The New Century Singers, at the turn of the century. The premise of the singing

group right from the start was that it would be open to anyone, auditions would be free and would not be a 'choral society’, instead embracing all forms of music and all genres. In the 20 years since the

group was founded this has been achieved. This broad eclectic ranges from medieval to modern popular music and will continue as the basis of the choir. Their two concerts per year

have embraced classical music through film and stage scores to composers of today. A spokesperson says: ‘Last year was a big year for all of

our Choir members as we reached our twentieth year of performing as a Choir and we celebrated it very well. ‘We invited you all to come

and join us to help celebrate our big event, especially any past Choir members who had wished to come back and help celebrate with us too – many thanks to all who come along.’ All their concerts are a

challenge to perform to the

best of their ability and the support they have had from the townsfolk over the two decades has been greatly appreciated. The group’s numbers have diminished and swelled over the years and they will continue to enjoy their singing and their choir family well into the future.
