Bringing back NHS services

URGENT actions have been agreed by Kent and Medway CCG to continue restoring Kent’s NHS services impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. But it also warns of challenges of second-wave Coronavirus. Emergency activity fell by 45% during the peak spring months. There has since been a steady in- crease, and by the end of Septem- ber was near pre-pandemic levels. Urgent care is being moved to

“the most appropriate place for de- livery”, which could see up to 20% being provided in urgent treat- ment centres.

There is emphasis now on en- couraging the public to “Think 111” and telephone this number – or going to the corresponding web- site – rather going directly to A&E. Primary care has secured £2m capital funding to re-design un- scheduled care, and this will form part of the urgent elective care management.

Chemotherapy and radiother- apy services are in place and activ- ity is planned to return to normal levels by the end of October. Infec- tion protection and control remains a priority with cancer surgery. Cancer demand is not yet back to pre-Covid levels, but continues to rise. The two-week wait for urgent referrals remain 25% under pre- pandemic levels. The group says key areas of con- cern include the need for addi- tional capital funding for critical care expansion; endoscopy will re- quire a staffed mobile solution; restoration of community and mental health services. l Concerns have been expressed of an influx of GP referrals from outside Kent and Medway to Dar- ent Valley Hospital, and whether it could affect local patients. l A single pathology IT system for all Kent is being supported by the CCG. A key role is to report on blood samples.

Trust top for emergency care MAIDSTONE and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust has been rated the best per- forming trust for emergency care in the country. In the seven days up to September 16, the trust was seeing and admit-

ting or discharging over 97% of people attending its emergency depart- ments within the four-hour national standard. A spokesman said: “Whilst it is the first time the trust has been rated number one in the performance figures, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells has in fact been one of the five best performing emergency departments in the south region for the last 18 months.”

black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and deprived populations are being considered by Kent and Medway CCG. The group’s governing body was told Covid-19 had exposed health inequalities wider than 10 years ago. GPs are being asked to advise patients on ways to reduce personal risk, which include maintaining a healthy weight and controlling both blood pressure and diabetes. Healthwatch Kent and Medway has offered help and to identify groups and people.
