There were 738 in- dividual bids coming in from as far as Japan, St Lucia, Canada, Ireland, and Germany. Heart of Kent Hospice’s comm- nity partnerships fundraiser, Karen Newton-Anker said: “The auction would not have been pos- sible without the generosity of our local Kentish artists who kindly donated their pieces of work.”

‘No plans to build’ on site of new sinkhole

THE housebuilder which owns the land where the latest sinkhole in Barming has appeared says it is not earmarked for homes, Downs Mail has learnt.

The patch of land where a large

crater opened up late last month, just yards from existing houses, is set aside as an open space, accord- ing to Bovis Homes. A Bovis spokesman said: “This is

to remain open space, with nothing to be built on top, and the area was due to be fenced off anyway due to the nearby pond.” Many locals have linked in- creased housing development to the rise in the number of sinkholes appearing.

Rachel Jones commented on Facebook: “Haven’t had sinkholes in the area until they started build- ing on every scrap of empty land along Hermitage Lane and I’ve lived in the surrounding area for over 40 years.”

But a prominent councillor cau- tioned people not to make the con- nection.

Cllr Fay Gooch, the deputy leader of Maidstone Borough Council, said: “I do understand why locals are blaming sink holes on over-development.

“It makes you think, but it is not

a proven fact, bearing in mind the geology of the area is made up of limestone, sandstone and hassock, which can cause the ground to be unstable and sink holes to appear.”

Bovis Homes say the land where the sinkhole has opened up is designated as open space, and will not be built on

She counselled developers to in-

vest in the technology to establish where the ground is weakest be- fore building. Bovis added: “Safety is the prior- ity and we have fenced off the area while we work with our contrac- tors to prepare an action plan.” Just over a month ago, a large sinkhole appeared on South East Water land close to the latest void. In 2018, the Tonbridge Road was

shut for months while a massive collapse was fixed.
