Speeding concerns
WE KNOW many people have been watching developments relating to the possible south-east Maidstone relief road (often referred to as the Leeds-Langley relief road). These last few weeks has seen some very positive news in this regard. In a letter sent by the Conservative Cabinet Member for Highways at Kent County Council, Michael Payne, to the leader of Maidstone Borough Council, support for the principle of such a road was given. This is an incredibly positive step for all concerned, and the biggest sign yet that this project could get off the ground, much to the relief of thousands of residents, already struggling with Maidstone’s congestion.
We have both long campaigned for a relief road to help the south of Maidstone cope with the burden of extra development, and we passionately believe this will lead to quicker journey times and better prospects for all residents in the local area.
Whilst building new roads might help solve the traffic congestion, a common problem we hear about is speeding in residential areas. This seems to be something which is getting worse rather than better and is a particular concern for the elderly and those with children alike.
We’ve been working with Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Scott, as well as local residents to create solutions which don’t hamper law-abiding motorists. Solutions such as one-way systems to prevent rat-running, as well as “build-outs” to intentionally slow vehicles down have often been popular with residents whilst reducing nuisance speeding.
