Calling all budding saddlers and leatherworkers: Abbey England scholarship helps entrepreneurs take the reins.
A
rtisan leatherwork and equestrian supplier Abbey England is looking for applications for its scholarship programme, from saddlers and leatherworkers at the outset of their careers.
The company, which is a leading supplier of premium products and tools to the UK and beyond, will ensure the two successful applicants will each receive financial and practical support, at a crucial time in their professional development.
Now in its fourth year, the Abbey England Scholarship programme provides successful candidates with £500 worth of product from the company’s website. They will also receive expert advice and online support for their businesses, via Abbey England’s social media channels. In return, Abbey England encourages the scholarship winners to provide a monthly blog, so readers can share their journey over the course of the year.
Richard Brown, CEO at Abbey England, explains: “We understand the pressures saddlers and leatherworkers face at the beginning of their careers. The outlay they must find, to get the right tools for the work they are doing, is a huge investment. However, we also know how important it is for them to have the right tools and materials from day one.
“Too oſten, saddlers and leatherworkers invest in cheaper, lower- quality tools, but this is generally false economy, as they are more likely to break, blunt or wear out easily. Our scholarship programme has been designed to help out financially, but also by providing expert advice learned from our years of experience working in the industry. We pride ourselves on providing the best quality leathercraſt tools, and this is supplemented with the valuable advice we can give. We also want to help our successful applicants – as well as to encourage others – by sharing their story and promoting their businesses through our own online social media channels.”
Such was the level of applicants in 2019, that Abbey England awarded two scholarships. Saddler and saddle fitter Zoë Hurst, and leathercraſt worker Natasha Kerimova. This has now set the
LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW CANCELLATION STATEMENT
It is with great sadness and regret that Bolesworth Events have taken the difficult decision to cancel Liverpool International Horse Show 2020. Over the past six months, the team have worked with the M&S Bank Arena to model a series of scenarios that would allow us to deliver a viable model for the indoor show in the current challenging circumstances. With the health and safety, as well as the welfare of the equestrian community at the heart of our decision making, we must act responsibly. As a result, given the commercial implications and current government guidance regarding social distancing and mass gatherings, it is clear an event of this scale poses far too great a risk to host in what has already been a challenging year.
We appreciate that many riders and supporters will be disappointed by this news and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone directly involved with the event; our sponsors, visitors, competitors, exhibitors, officials and contractors for their continued support.
Managing Director, Nina Barbour said: “Since the start of the pandemic, we have been working tirelessly to develop a model for an indoor event. Having successfully hosted a series of outdoor competitions at Bolesworth over the summer

precedent for 2020, and recognises the importance both sectors play in the creative and leather goods industry.
The 2019 Abbey England scholarships winners explain how their success has impacted them. Natasha commented: “I loved our collaboration. I spent my grant on quality Abbey England hand tools. This year I incorporated hand stitching techniques into my designs, so the tools came in very handy. My Abbey England blog also proved to be very useful. It helped me to formulate my thoughts regarding craſt and artisanship which I previously had no time to focus on. Hopefully, it was interesting to read, even though this year all of us were slightly lost at times.
”
Zoë added: “It felt like a huge achievement to be awarded an Abbey England Scholarship. Not only have the funds helped me purchase key materials and fittings for the exams to further my qualifications, but also the access to the knowledge and exposure that is offered by Abbey England that isn't available anywhere else is invaluable to me.

The key challenge has been to transfer this model into an indoor environment with the public in attendance; it simply hasn’t been feasible from a health and safety or commercial point of view.
Earlier this year , we hosted ‘Equestrian Relief’; bringing together the equestrian
community to raise money in support of our NHS heroes. Having raised over £300,000, we very much hoped that Liverpool would be a celebration of this campaign and herald the end of what has been a challenging year for so many, and we are currently scoping alternative ways of achieving this.
In order to support our riders and partners, we are exploring the feasibility to develop a 2* International Show, which will strictly be behind closed doors in line with current Government guidelines, for competitors only, on the same dates as originally planned for the Liverpool Show (31st December 2020 – 3rd January 2021).
As with all our events this year; we are keen to support the UK equestrian industry back into competition at the top level and it feels only right we continue this work and support our elite riders as they prepare for T

wish everyone well in these uncertain times and look forward to welcoming you all to a truly incredible show in 2021.
