Hanbury Show, where alongside the great country show the association hold their annual club show. Members show their horses in a range of traditional classes, all of which have their origins in the working horse including: - In-hand Showing of mares with foal at foot through to veterans, demonstrating not just the conformation of the horses, but also their obedience and manners. - Harness classes where members are able to present their horses in a variety of traditional, working and show harnesses - Driving classes including carts, carriages and agricultural implements - Ridden classes, demonstrating the versatility of the modern heavy horse

The show always draws a big crowd of interested spectators who also get to see the hotly contested best shod class, where hand-made shoes are still expected, and the best plaited competition where traditional braiding skills are on

show. There’s also a bit of fun with the long-reining competition around a set of obstacles – entertaining to watch, but also a very important part of training a harness horse.

Members will oſten compete at ploughing matches across the region. We support our members in learning and perfecting this heritage skill. Ploughing is a very challenging skill for both horse and ploughman to learn, but well worth the effort.

Christmas Ride & Drive – each year members work the Christmas pud off with a ride and drive event. The last couple of years this has been at the Wyre Forest. Members join in on wheels, on horseback and on foot, for a festive walk out. A great social gathering that gets everyone ready for the new year!

“The MHHA has been brilliant, providing us with so much help and support as we have started out with our first Heavy Horse. The wealth of experience and knowledge of traditional working horsemanship within the association is fantastic. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging” First-time Suffolk Horse owner

New members are welcomed - you can find the association on facebook (midlandheavyhorseassociation), visit https://mhha.org.uk or email mhha.membership@googlemail.com for more information.
