32 | NCCCO FOUNDATION – VIRTUAL REALITY’S POTENTIAL IN CERTIFICATION
Earlier this year, the NCCCO Foundation published a study evaluating the potential for Virtual Reality (VR) simulators to serve as a tool for operator certification. Industrial Training International (ITI) launched their VR Crane Simulator in 2017, and demonstrated it at the NCCCO Lift Safety Zone as well as in their own booth at ConExpo that year.
In this Feature, we reviewed a webinar and
podcast featuring leaders from the NCCCO Foundation, ITI, and their test design partner, to share the story behind the story.

ON THE COVER: Heerema Marine Contractors’ SCCV Sleipnir is seen in July of this year hauling the 8100 mT Jotun-B jacket after. The decommissioning took place in the North Sea field about 200 kilometers west of Stavanger, Norway, with the piece being taken to a decommissioning site in Vats, Norway. It was, at the time, the record-holder for the largest single lift jacket removal. Not long after, the vessel went on to Shell’s Brent Alpha to perform another single lift jacket removal weighing in at 10,100 mT. That jacket was transported from the field 186 kilometers northeast of Scotland’s Shetland Islands to the same Vats, Norway decommissioning site. You’ll find much more about these projects in our Industry News section of this issue. Photo used with permission, Copyright Heerema Marine Contractors.
