Nicholas Walsh | The NRP Group, Development Associate

As a recent transplant to Texas, I have already had the privilege to work in communities across the State as we work toward our goal of providing high quality affordable housing for families, seniors,

and individuals. I graduated from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business in Spring of 2019 with a concentration in real estate and political science. I began my role as a Development Associate in July 2019 where I help to originate projects across Texas utilizing both 4% and 9% Housing Tax Credits. I look forward to engaging with the TALHFA community.

Patrick Russell | Austin HFC

I started my affordable housing career in 2016 at the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs where I managed the annual rewriting process of the Qualified Allocation Plan. For three years,

my colleagues and I turned to roundtables, surveys, academic research, best practices, and our own in-house data analysis to drive informed amendments to the Department’s rules that determine where and how Texas’ financing for affordable housing will be allocated. In 2019, I joined the City of Austin and its nonprofit subsidiary, the Austin Housing Finance Corporation, to manage the city’s partnership program with affordable housing developers. Through this program, we are able to offer property tax abatements and access to gap financing in exchange for strategically locating housing in optimal areas and offering units at deeper levels of affordability. I have joined TALHFA to learn more about tax exempt bonds and to learn about other local Housing Finance Corporations’ innovative ideas.

I was incredibly fortunate to spend much of my 20s reading lots of books in academic settings (and skiing

and camping on the weekends) and have degrees from the University of Central Arkansas, the University of Nevada-Reno, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Robert Thies | The NRP Group, Development Associate

Having retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service, I wanted to continue to serve my country but wasn’t quite sure in what capacity. As with many of my fellow veterans, I was looking

for a new career which would allow me to broaden my expertise and be involved in the public sector. In 2013, I was fortunate to meet Dan Markson, former Executive Vice-President of the NRP Group and I became his executive assistant. During my tenure with him, I learned the intricacies of the housing industry and how rewarding it can be. Through his mentorship, I learned about land acquisitions, busi- ness origination, preliminary due diligence, and sourcing public-private partnerships. Today, I am an assistant developer with the NRP Group and enjoy helping families and those individuals transitioning into the workforce in their endeavors seeking quality, affordable housing. I’m proud to continue Dan’s legacy while at the same time giving back to my community through residential development.

I am currently a member of the Greater San Antonio Builders Association and serve as the President of City of Cibolo’s Economic Development Committee. I have been an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and have been a charter supporter of the Randolph Area Christian Assistance Program.
