is very common and often celebrated. For women, heavy drinking is typically defined as consuming 8 drinks or more per week, and binge drinking is consuming 4 or more drinks on a single occasion, generally within about 2 hours.
A Alcohol is deeply ingrained in our social interactions and a
woman’s decision to stop drinking can be very intimidating. However, given the progression of alcohol use disorder, more and more women are considering this choice while they still have a choice to make.
Through my own long-term recovery and professional prac-
tice, I have learned that women have unique needs when creating an alcohol-free lifestyle. It is imperative to build an individualized “Sober Toolbox” based on the following pillars:
1. The Physical: Our physical needs must be appreciated and ad- dressed in recovery. We must be aware of our current routines and have structure that support healing in our sleep hygiene and habits, diet and nutrition, and our sensory diet (through our “5 sense therapies”).
2. Pause: Developing a mindfulness practice through meditation, breath awareness and focus, journaling, and reflection will en- able us to navigate life’s difficulties while alcohol free.
3. People: As social beings, humans need to pay particular atten- tion to finding community in which we can socialize soberly, and in productive ways that enable us to create a new sober lifestyle, and ultimately- to be the woman that we wish to be.
4. Parasympathetic: We need to partner with our nervous sys- tems to reset our innate barometer for stress. Utilizing exercise, yoga, tai chi, and more we can fine tune our response to anxi- eties without utilizing alcohol, and with great success!
5. Positive Indulgence: Cultivating habits that are truly rewarding and life enhancing is the difference between surviving while sober, and a thriving sober life.
Every woman needs to individualize their plan when creating any wellness plan and a Sober Toolbox is no different.
