Around Kingswear BY MIKE TREVORROW
Stitch in These Times For some weeks now the Cancer Research shop in Dartmouth has been selling masks, well before the government caught up and decided we needed to wear them. These masks have all been made by Jan Trevorrow who has donated them as a contribution towards the charity. She has been a one-woman sweat-shop in Kingswear, making up to a hundred masks a day. The sales of these masks have now raised well over a thousand pounds for Cancer Research and one really good aspect of them is that they are washable and therefore re- useable.
cloth bags which have been given away at the shop to customers. for a contribution towards funds, and, of course, the vast majority of people are only too happy to do so. This has dramatically reduced the use of plastic bags, so is a win-win situation. Jan’s source of fabrics for these bags and masks is largely from duvets which have been donated to all sorts of charity shops. She trawls the shops in Dartmouth, Brixham, Totnes and even Topsham to buy the duvets. This means that the charity shops benefit from the sale of the duvets, then of course Cancer Research benefits from the sale of bags and masks. Another win-win situation.
Jan was horrified, understandably,
by the widespread sales of single use, plastic masks, regarding these as an abomination on two fronts. So she wanted to counter their use as much as possible, which is why she has been working so hard to provide a better product and, of course, to help raise the funds for Cancer Research while the shop was closed. So far she has made over 1500 masks, using up half a kilometre of elastic! This is just the latest in Jan’s campaign to reduce single-use plastic at the Dartmouth shop; for several years now she has been making
Kingswear in Bloom Every year Kingswear looks attractive in the summer with the hanging baskets, the memorial garden to Lorna Wright and of course, the gardens which many people take pains to keep colourful and tidy; but this year we also have a very bright and attractive addition – the orchard which has been planted with wild flowers. It has been a really dazzling delight in what was an otherwise dull, nondescript corner of Jubilee Park. Well done to the team which has set-up and maintained this
area. However, even the normal hanging baskets are looking better than ever this year, they are overflowing with bright colour and really cheering the place up. I understand that Jo from the post office has been doing a lot of watering of these baskets and her care is showing with the results. Thanks to her and to anyone else who has been dutifully watering these delights, you are brightening up our lives. The Wishing Well is
also looking at its best, a welcome spot of colour for those queuing for the Lower Ferry.
Is it just me or has this spring and summer been especially lovely with fabulous blossoms and flowers? Perhaps it is because we have had more time to look at such things and have been rushing about less; certainly we have been walking about more and so seeing more of the lovely place in which we live.
