U3A is a movement of retired and semi-retired people who come together to continue their educational, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment. www.u3asite.org.uk/dartvalley

DART VALLEY UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE IS ALIVE AND WELL

Dart Valley U3A have continued to operate, albeit in a smaller way. In case you don’t know, U3A is the University of the Third Age, an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community - those in their third “age” of life. Anybody in this category can join U3A and this includes people who are working part-time. There is no lower age for membership. Every U3A is different and, here in Dartmouth, we have a thriving collection of people leading and taking part in a wide variety of interest groups. These include various languages, cards, books, Mahjong, scrabble, pub lunches, to name but a few. Despite the arrival of Covid 19,

several groups have been running meetings online using Zoom; ‘Climate Change’ had wide- ranging discussions for 80 - 90 minutes, one being about “How to shift your mindset and choose your future”, which recommended adopting a “stubborn optimism!” Both book groups have been discussing their own books on Zoom and ‘iPad for Beginners’ met fortnightly, with Suzie Dodsworth, the convener, using 2 iPads to enable demonstrations and contact with the group. Other groups, such as ‘Geology’, have suggested walks with

information about the geography and geology of the area. ‘Digital Photography’ has had projects to work towards, as has ‘Local History’ - on subjects such as local churches, castles and houses with history.

We are a lively and friendly organisation and are always ready to accommodate

new members and interests.

‘Archery’ has started up under

strict guidelines from National U3A and ‘Pitch and Putt’ had a session

recently, so we are gradually edging nearer to some normality. We have a full programme of speakers for the second Thursday morning in the month, starting in October (we hope!). The AGM has been pencilled in for then; this will be a short affair to allow for the talk. The Flavel will be opening towards the beginning of September, but with obvious restrictions of numbers. As a Committee, we shall have to ensure any meetings follow the guidelines of the National U3A Organisation. As yet, nothing is settled but we are hopeful that some groups will be reinstated in the not too distant future. As I come to the end of my Chairmanship, I can look back on an extremely varied four and a half years! From the 20th anniversary of Dart Valley U3A to the suspension of activities due to Covid 19! Do look us up on our website and see if there is any special interest group that would make you think of joining us. We are a lively and friendly organisation and are always ready to accommodate new members and interests.
