“That’s not unusual (to have little informa- tion on war dead). Sometimes there is a treasure trove of information in our archives and I think it depends on the individual.How and when they joined, when they died,what the family produced or shared with the com- mission at the time and what the military had in their archives. Some individuals,when we look at them across Canada,we find a lot of information and photos. I actually went back to the UK on Gunnar Evans to see if there was a bit more information and really there is not.We knew he was young,he was in the artillery,we knew when he died and where he was buried,”he said.


Europe Day and Victory over Japan Day in 2020,the CWGC had big plans to remember the fallen. But, with the COVID-19 pandemic reaching global scales early this year, their plans had to change.


Not wanting to drop all celebration of the big anniversaries of the two events, the CWGC shifted gears and introduced the #ShareYourTribute campaign which allows anyone to submit stories, photos and tributes of loved ones who fought during the world wars. “A couple of big events coming up that were planned for this year were VE Day and


VJ Day.There were a lot of events that were planned for that and a lot of celebration and commemoration.With the pandemic, that was difficult for us.We are self-isolating and we’re across the world.A lot of our cemeter- ies are closed by the local government so we wanted to find a way to allow people to remember their family and friends without going to the cemetery themselves.They came up with the Wall of Remembrance and if you get a chance, just go to our website at cwgc.org and take a look at what is on that Wall of Remembrance.
