with a disability, caused by a service-related illness or injury, to choose the form of compensation that works best for them and their families,” said Lescoutre. There is also the education and training benefit available to those veter- ans that successfully transition from active military duty to a civilian life as well as their education and post-military goals, while making them more competitive in the civilian work force. “It also permits veterans to pursue activities that give them purpose and

result in them feeling satisfied with their main job or activity,”he said. Additionally, there is the option of career transition services to help vets,

survivors and their spouses to find work in post-military life. All veterans, former RCMP members and their families are encouraged

to reach out to VAF if they have any questions or concerns. “We are always looking for ways to improve communication with the

veteran community and actively use a variety of tools to share informa- tion, such as social media, advertising, events, conducting outreach to stakeholders, and working with Ministerial Advisory Groups,”he said. “Results show that veterans, members of the RCMP, and their families who visit us online can more easily find the information they need when they need it thanks to a major renewal of our website over the past year. The design and structure of the new website were created through user experience testing by veterans and other users across Canada.” The department also recognizes its vets through the achievements and sacrifices of those that have served and it’s a way to have Canadians engage in remembrance. The list included commemorative events, ceremonies, cemetery and

grave maintenance, a funeral and burial program, learning resources to engage youth and educators as well as grants and contributions for com- memorative projects. There is also the care preservation and presentation of overseas memo-

rials. Lescoutre was asked about the decline of Canadian Veterans in recent

years due to age or death. His response was “Overall the total VAC clients (veterans and survivors)

decreased by 1.5 per cent in 2018-2019; but that trend is not expected to continue.” “It is forecasted that growth in Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP veter- ans and survivors will slightly out pace the decline of War Service veterans (of the Second World War and Korean War) and survivors, resulting in an average of 0.1 per cent total VAC client growth over the next five years.”
