Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has many pro-


grams in place to support the well being of the veterans and their families. VAC’s focus is to promote recognition and


remembrance of achievements and sacrifices of those who served Canada in times of war, mili- tary conflict and peace. The total estimated number of veterans


(between war service veterans and Canadian Armed Forces veterans) as of March 2019 is 639,900.VAC looks after over 186,000 of those veterans. The department offers several benefits and


services including: for mental health, financial supports - specifically for income, emergency funding and costs for long-term care - supports are also in place for those veterans looking to remain independent and self-sufficient, post- service life, training and education and for those seeking employment. Benefits and services are available for family, survivors and caregivers as well as for organiza-


tions that are commemorating or helping out veterans and their families. “Over the past several years, there has been a significant increase in demand for services and benefits. Since 2015,Veterans Affairs Canada has seen an increase of more than 60 per cent in disability applications,”said Marc Lescoutre, spokesperson for VAC. “The reasons for the increase include: the


growing need for mental health services, rising number of medically releasing veterans, the introduction of Pension for Life and improved outreach and communication about benefits and services.” Pensions for Life came into effect last year and


offers a combination of benefits that includes recognition, income support and better stability for the Canadian Armed Forces and veterans due to injuries sustained while on duty. “Pension for Life addresses concerns raised by


military and veteran communities and families. It empowers CAF members and veterans living
