Canadian soil, authorities recruited older aged boys (15-19) to help. ‘Soldiers of the Soil’was a national initiative ran by the Canadian Food


Board during WWI that recruited 22,385 young men across the country where they lived on rural farms for terms of three or more months. In exchange for their labour, the recruits received room and board, spend- ing money,and those who were still in high school were exempt from class- es and final exams. Once their terms were completed, they received a badge acknowledging their services,often at a community ceremony. Help was also sought after from women and girls in high school who helped in the agriculture sector. While women had typically assisted in farming before the war,they were


now relied on more than ever with many men being shipped off to war. During WWII,much of the same was needed in terms of food production. According to wartimecanada.ca,by the end of the war, it was estimated


that Canadian exports accounted for 57 per cent of British wheat and flour consumption – down from its 1941 peak of 77 per cent – as well as 39 per cent of bacon,15 per cent of eggs,24 per cent of cheese,and 11 per cent of evaporated milk consumed in Britain.
