n common with other leisure activities and sporting pursuits, boating and therefore marinas have been greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic not least by the absolute necessity
to retain highly experienced staff, many of whom have taken the time and trouble to secure relevant qualifications in marina management and operations.
Marinas that have had to close entirely or place
restrictions on berth-holders’ access to their craft have not been able to absolve their responsibility for maintaining essential infrastructure, providing security and carrying out inspections of the boats in their charge at a time of zero or falling income. Fortunately, our industry is well-aware that it is the
guardian of its customers’ valuable assets and takes that responsibility seriously. However, without the income from berth fees, most marinas would simply become untenable, leading to inevitable closure and the possible loss of berth space on a permanent basis. The resulting lack of berthing facilities would then have a knock-on effect for local employment opportunities and severely reduce trade for marine businesses, including yacht brokers, boatyards and chandleries, as well as

bars and restaurants in the surrounding area. This must be recognised by local and national
governments, as well as financial institutions, at this difficult time for the whole economy. Meanwhile, we can only hope that COVID-19 will soon have run its course and berth-holders, visitors and their guests will be able to resume their boating lifestyle. * * *
The ‘Marina Visit’ on pages 20-21 in this issue of Marina Industry features Conwy Marina in North Wales, which was previously a member of Quay Marinas. That company recently merged with Dean & Reddyhoff to create a new group called ‘boatfolk’, with plans to create a fresh new vision of inclusive waterside destinations focussed on people, places and experiences. A recent press release expresses the hope that the
group will see the renaissance of the Great British seaside holiday. As the ‘boatfolk’ brand has begun its first season with international travel reduced due to COVID-19, its marinas offer opportunities for existing customers and potential new boaters to dip their toes in the water!
