Composite fingers maximise berth space in Norway

I

n Tønsberg, Norway, an old section of industrial waterfront has been completely transformed into

a contemporary condominium development named Kaldnes Brygge, which features boating access to the strikingly beautiful Oslofjord. The builder chose SF Marina of Gothenburg for a state-of- the-art pontoon system with moveable finger piers to maximise efficient use of berthing space. This Swedish company designs, builds and supplies a range of floating breakwaters and concrete pontoons, together with complementary marine structures, for clients throughout the world. It has established an international network of offices and manufacturing sites and this has enabled it to achieve the successful completion of numerous marinas, as well as other infrastructure projects for recreational craft and commercial vessels around the globe.

Installed by Arne Rød & Co AS, the 108 m dock runs the length of the waterfront and has 26 finger piers. Composite wood fingers were chosen to reduce costs and complement the post-modern décor of the residential area.

Gangways were placed on both ends of the pontoon and are hinged to accommodate the local 0.8 m tidal fluctuation. The installation comprises SF Marina’s rugged SF1024 floating concrete pontoons. Thick-walled

and reinforced with steel, they are unsinkable and provide an exceptionally long service life with minimal maintenance. Integrated conduits supply electricity to the service pedestals alongside the berths. A semi-modular design, the structure uses an innovative Witherspoon glide anchoring system to secure the walkway, Y boom and fingers. “By combining concrete and

composite materials, we created a cost-effective marina that offers the flexibility of moveable fingers that can be adjusted to change the berth size as needed,” said Tor-Öiyvind Halvorsen, CEO of SF Pontona Norge AS, SF Marina’s distributor in Norway. The dock is phase one of a five-part harbour project that will have a capacity for 200 boats up to 10.5 m in length. Located 106 km South South-

West of Oslo, Kaldnes Brygge is a tribute to the area’s shipbuilding past. It combines living, business and recreation spaces into a unique environment within the heart of a thriving small city. SF Marina info@sfmarina.com www.sfmarina.com.
