Family health: Novid

We are probably all saturated with information on Covid-19 so I thought a non- Covid (Novid) topic would provide a break.

There has been a dramatic increase in prescriptions for children with Cow’s Milk Allergy (CMPI) in recent years: A 500% increase in the last 10 years! This special hydrolysed milk formula for children costs the NHS £64 million a year, yet only 2% of children suffer from it.

A lot of conditions common in babies can mimic the symptoms of Cows Milk Protein Intolerance CMPI. These include colic, eczema and gastric reflux. It is important we get the diagnosis right so we do not deny tolerant babies the benefit of dairy based products and that we do not waste precious NHS resources.

Symptoms: Cows’ milk allergy can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:

• skin reactions – such as a red itchy rash or swelling of the lips, face and around the eyes

• digestive problems – such as stomach ache, vomiting, colic, diarrhoea or constipation

• hay fever-like symptoms – such as a runny or blocked nose

• eczema that does not improve with treatment

If you think your baby may have CMPI contact your Health Visitor or GP. If they feel CMPI is likely, they will recommend a trial of Extra Hydrolysed milk (protein has been broken down). If the symptoms abate it is then recommended re introducing Cow’s milk protein after a month. There is no test to confirm so this re-challenge is essential to decide whether Cow’s milk should be withheld until the child is a year old.

Stay safe and hopefully we will be resetting to the new normal when you read this.
