Poole Osprey Project
Last month we were awaiting the return of our male osprey LS7. So have we had an appearance yet?
LS7 has still not arrived back in Poole Harbour and the 2020 breeding season has now
passed, so it seems we must wait at least one more year to see breeding ospreys here once more. But LS7 is only three years old and turned up similarly late last year, so he could yet appear this summer.
His absence
hasn’t stopped the osprey excitement though… We’ve now had two other ospreys appear on our livestream camera alongside our female CJ7! First, on Wednesday 13th May, an un-ringed osprey (likely a female) landed briefly on the camera perch before being chased off by CJ7. Then six days later on Tuesday 19th May, a second osprey landed on the nest, this time with a blue ring reading PT0! This young bird (again believed to be female) was born in 2018 at the Loch of the Lowes in Scotland, making this her first sighting since leaving on migration two years ago, which left us very hopeful that we might see some of our own birds returning soon too.
014 Dyfi 20.05.2020
And less than 24 hours later we received the incredible news that one of translocated chicks from 2018, known as 014, had landed on a nest at the Dyfi Osprey Project in Wales, nearly 250 kilometres from where we released her in Poole Harbour two years ago! Between now and then she’s spent a year and a half in West Africa, and safely found her way back to the UK (we’ll forgive her for overshooting Poole Harbour a bit).
So where will she go now? She may continue to explore Wales, head over to the Midlands or Scotland, or even return home to Dorset. And maybe if we’re lucky another of her cohort will join her… Let’s hope the next one to turn up is a male though (for CJ7’s sake)!
