A thriving virtual community

The students and staff of Corfe Hills School have made a fabulous response to the situation we have found ourselves in since schools were closed to most young people on 20th March. Off site, students have settled into a daily routine which includes a variety of written assignments, live lessons in Microsoft Teams and online work in a number of subjects. Amongst other things, between them, they have completed a staggering 20,000 questions a week on Hegarty Maths! On site, a small number of key workers’ and other qualifying children have worked hard in the school library.

With no real lead time to prepare before lockdown began, staff have quickly learnt how to make good use of online collaboration tools and we have now

had virtual lessons, virtual staff briefings, virtual coffee and a virtual assembly for all the Corfe Hills students who are due to continue to the Sixth Form in September. Staff have also done an amazing job of assigning GCSE and A-level grades, showing just how well they know students and the progress they have made over time. Our student support team have also been brilliant in looking after those young people who, for whatever reason, have found lockdown more challenging.

This has been a great time for creativity. One teacher has been making PPE for local healthcare settings from home – and set his D & T students the challenge of producing their own marble run from whatever they can find at home. We have also seen the launch of a lockdown song writing competition and lots of other ideas, recipes and activities being shared.
