Poole Athletic Club Some promising signs of life !

The last weeks have given us adaptations to hold Athletics competitions. The British Milers’ Club (BMC) organised a “Virtual” 1 Mile time trial to commemorate Sir Roger Bannister’s first 4-minute mile, on May 6th. Our Club had 14 athletes involved, 12 of them “1st. claim”, who submitted times, based on each running a mile distance on an approved ‘course’ and with agreed timing conditions. These were ranked in age- groups. The results are shown in the table below:

one occasion between Friday, May 22nd and Monday May 25th. We currently have at least 14 registered for this!

World Athletics (WA) continued the “Virtual” theme. (Still available on WA YouTube!)

Six of the best age-group rankings were then used to calculate team rankings in which our club placed 10th of 52 teams. Particular credit goes to Josh (our fastest time) and to Oscar (running 1st. claim for Bournemouth AC and best of his age-group) for their runs.

The next BMC “live” event will be based on times for 1km on an approved ‘course’ on

On Saturday, May 16th, WA held their second live-streamed “Ultimate Garden Clash”, again on Pole Vault. It featured three of the best women vaulters using their home track facilities, not ‘gardens’. They each tried to do their best successful attempts at clearing a bar set at 4m in 2 x 15 minutes, with only 5 minutes rest (two of the men had managed 36 clearances of 5m!). They were also trying to beat the mens’ combined 98 clearances! In the event, Kat Stefanidi cleared 34 times, Katie 30 and Alysha Newman 21. Never having to train like this, here lactic acid built up and their arms tired! Amazing! Shot Putt next?

The immediate future.

Right now, England Athletics guidelines have not changed: no face-to-face training before June 1st, no competition until July 1st, but BCP Council, following Government advice, have started to re-open outdoor facilities. So we continue to think and hopefully plan! We grieve with all those who are grieving. We pray that we all stay alert and safe!
