Ham is often prepared with glazes or toppings that are both spicy and sweet and that will balance the inherent saltiness of the meat. Well paired wines can accomplish the same objective.


My sweetheart wines for ham will always be Riesling or Gewürztraminer; both grapes tend to offer fresh, flavourful profiles, with enough intense fruit to balance the salt in the ham. An Alsatian Gewurtztraminer (Trimbach) or a Rheingau Riesling for their mineral-laden, Old World character would be my choice all day, every day.


Bubbles are always deserving of a mention…in all forms. There are so many amazing lesser-known sparkling wines being produced all around the world. We tend to think of Prosecco as being Northern Italy’s best sparkling export, but have you ever drunk Asti, a real wine trade favourite? Try a glass with a warm, spicy hot cross bun. Asti is produced in Northern Italy’s Piedmont region and has all the fruit profile of Prosecco, but without the often inflated price tag. Make sure your bottle is labelled DOCG to ensure high standards. Not keen? Swap your Champagne for a Crémant de Limoux from the southern Languedoc region; Chardonnay is blended with other white grapes, such as Mauzac, to produce a dry, wonderfully expressive fizz, with tropical fruit and spice. Or finally, the more adventurous amongst you may just love one of the following New


World sparkling wines…a sparkling Chenin Blanc from South Africa or wonderful Australian sparkling Shiraz.
