LIVE 24-SEVEN CORE CLINICS INTEGRATED CARE TEAM

Regular readers may recognise the smiling Jonathan Handford. As the regional MD of Fine & Country, Jon is a long-standing voice of expertise in our property pages. Jon is also a very familiar face at the award-winning Warwickshire polyclinic, Core Clinics, having been a patient for the past 8 years.

The arrival of a new baby with wife Laura, and the increasing demands of professional progression mean that Jon’s lifestyle has changed significantly over the past couple of years. Jon had less time to exercise or relax, and it became increasingly challenging for him to invest in his health. Like so many busy professionals and parents Jon found himself relying on rushed sandwiches at his desk and caffeinated drinks for energy, an evening drink to unwind, and the occasional cigarette. In spite of the challenges, Jon’s positive personality and ‘always on’ attitude enabled him to keep performing.

Jon initially came to Core Clinics’ Warwick clinic in a lot of pain. He had an annular tear (a tear in the ligament connecting the vertebra to the disc), lower back pain, and ongoing shoulder issues (pain between the shoulder blades) associated to poor posture and working long hours at a mainly desk-based job.

JON’S CASE FILE

Under the expert guidance of Core’s Clinical Director Dr Stefaan Vossen (DC) Jon undertook a treatment protocol combining chiropractic, soft tissue therapy and orthotics therapy. The treatment stabilised Jon’s posture and normalised his spinal function, improving loading through his discs and facet joints to enable the damaged tissue to recover. Most importantly for Jon, the treatment resulted in a rapid reduction in pain.

Following the initial treatment protocol, Jon was given advice on exercises to strengthen his back and reduce the risk of reinjury. He returns to the clinic for maintenance treatments every 6-8 weeks to make sure he stays pain-free and maintains mobility in his back and shoulders.

A keen mountaineer, Jon suffered an ankle injury in 2016 and was again helped by the Core team with a course of shockwave therapy. Shockwave therapy is a highly effective non-surgical treatment which encourages rapid tissue healing following injury. In a course of just 6 sessions over 6 weeks Jon’s ankle was as good as new.

At a review visit, Stefaan asked Jon about his overall health and identified that he would benefit from some additional support from the Core team. Since Jon had first become a patient, the clinic has grown significantly to become an award-winning polyclinic with a team of 30 including a GP; physical and manual therapists' (physiotherapy, osteopathy, podiatry, sports therapy, massage therapy and more); a nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner; psychologists, counsellors and coaches; exercise professionals; and complementary therapists.

Stefaan explained to Jon that the clinical team would work together with him in a completely integrated, person-centred way to identify the best treatment and self-care strategies. To achieve the best possible outcomes the team would focus on Jon’s structural health, biochemical (nutritional and hormonal) health, mental health and mindset, and lifestyle.
