Old library is best new building
THE best building in Scotland for 2017 has been named as Dunfer mline’s 134-year-old Carnegie Library and Galleries.
First opened in August 1883, the library underwent a £12.4m refurbishment during 2016 and re-opened to the public in spring 2017. The new-look building has now been
December-January 2017/18
awarded the prestigious Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award from the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
The award is worth £25,000, making it the UK’s most valuable architecture prize. The new extension was designed by Edin- burgh-based firm Richard Murphy Architects.
The library and gallery is run by On Fife,
Fife’s cultural trust that manages librar- ies, theatres, museums and galleries on behalf of the local council. The newly created space brings together the old and the new, with events spaces, a café, and a children’s library area that opens directly onto the garden.
