‘‘ Progress

At the start of this year, in my first column, I outlined the issues I planned to prioritise in my presidential year:

l transferable skills and the importance of moving between sectors

l encouraging new talent to develop a career in the information and library profession

l establishing CILIP as a credible association for knowledge and information management professionals

I’m delighted that there has been progress on all of these over the year. I’m thrilled at the response to my talks and articles on transferable skills and moving sectors, which have resonated so well with members. It really does feel like there is a new attitude towards moving between sectors and acknowledging our transferable skills. Long may that continue. I look forward to the work that CILIP will be undertaking in the next few years to develop a sector-wide library skills strategy, building on the work done this year on the Public Library Skills Strategy.

President’s View

A year of transformation T

his year has been an extraordinary year for CILIP, and for me. For both of us it’s been a

time of transformation. CILIP has undergone a major change in how it operates and what it offers members. While I am diversifying my skills by undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), enjoying the delights of learning to teach secondary geography. Next year is shaping up to be even better.

impressed with their determination and enthusiasm. Not to mention their ingenuity and creativity in developing support networks and shaping CPD opportunities. It’s important for new professionals’ views to be heard and represented throughout CILIP’s activities, within members’ networks and on the CILIP board. Chloe Menown joined the CILIP Board as the new professional representative in the summer, and is ensuring the new professionals views are shaping CILIP’s policies and activities. As a new professional, in the teaching sector, I realise the valuable role that professional associations fulfil in helping you find your way, supporting you and offering opportunities to grow within the profession. CILIP is well placed to provide these for anyone in the information management community.

Time of renewal

CILIP has been rejuvenated this year. It enters 2018 with a new membership offer, a newly created Leaders Network (providing leadership development opportunities) and a well-received, new sector-leading magazine, Information Professional. Advocacy work has been at the centre of activities this year: #AMillionDecisions campaign, highlighting the importance of information management roles in the NHS; and setting up the Libraries All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) to engage with government and policy decision makers.

Being President

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my year as President. I’m often asked what it’s like being President. It’s been a rollercoaster of exciting and challenging events and activities throughout the year. I’ve attended lots

of meetings, conferences, given talks and speeches, written articles and chaired the Audit Committee. The best bit of the role has been the opportunity to meet librarians from all sectors at events across the country. I was fascinated to hear about the challenges and opportunities they faced and how CILIP could support them. The role is exhilarating, provides opportunities to gain new skills and experience and to give something back to the profession. If you’re tempted to apply and want to know more, do contact me.

Next year

In January 2018, there will be a change over of roles in the presidential team. Ayub Khan becomes President (read his recent interview in October’s Update or at cilip.org.uk/page/AyubKahnPresident), while David Stewart joins as Vice President, and I become Immediate Past President. Good luck to both Ayub and David and I hope they enjoy their presidential roles as much as I have. IP
