Get involved with research

Do you ever feel daunted by the thought of “doing research”? Gillian Siddall talks about new tutorials which off er a starting point for your research journey and helps to dispel some of the myths around the research process.

THE Library and Information Research Group (Lirg) has recently launched Introduction to Research Skills, a three-part tutorial on CILIP’s VLE. These tutorials are designed to help you get involved in research. Even if you have already done some research, there is plenty to explore, including a guide on how to respond to the journal peer review process. The tutorials take you through the research process from start to fi nish.

The three tutorial sections look at:

1 Making research approachable, how research can help you in your role

2 How to plan research, what to consider 3 Doing research

You can work through all three tutorials, or just dip into the bits that you think are most relevant to you. The tutorials have been designed to be as interactive as possible, with quizzes and hand-outs to help you explore the benefi ts of research to you and your organisation. To add value to these tutori- als, the Library and Information Research Group committee members have shared their hints and tips based on what they have learnt about research in their careers. Each tutorial includes videos from experts on how to develop your research skills. Anthea Sutton provides a great video on the role of the literature review including an overview of the diff erent types of reviews. This is helpful in identifying what review type could help answer your research question. In her video, Jo Alcock off ers her advice on how to con- duct successful focus groups. These videos are invaluable in helping you to avoid some of the common pitfalls that can occur when you start to get involved in research.
