you develop as a professional. These might be useful to help provide justifi- cation for research to your manager and workplace.
How to plan Section 2 – How to plan research, what to consider? Includes real life project examples to show you how other people have done research. It is quite rare to see a couple of research proposal examples and a project plan. This tutorial offers you the chance to read them and look at how you could adapt the draft template for your own research project.
Your research Section 3 – Looks at conducting your own research. It takes you through some of the processes you may need to use as you do your research and it begins to explore the different ways you can disseminate your work. For example, an introduction on discourse analysis – how to review your focus group data. The final tutorial takes you through different ways of promot- ing and disseminating your research, from internal reports to social media and publishing journal articles. It also explains the best way of managing and responding to the peer review process, when publishing in a journal.
The research life cycle
From start to finish
Throughout the tutorials you will find links to relevant journal articles showing the research in practice and also references to books for further information. We hope these tutorials offer a good starting point for your research journey and help to dispel some of the myths around the research process. After completing the tutorials we hope you will have ideas on how to test some of the theories you have about your work that can help provide evidence for your service. The final tuto- rial will help you take the final steps to publishing your research so the rest of the library and information profession can learn from your project.
Winning research
This tutorial was inspired by my own introduction to research. As a newly-qual- ified librarian I attended a two-day event run by Lirg on how to draft a research proposal. It gave me and my colleague (Hannah Woods) a chance to explore
some of the common problems we saw at work. We then took one idea (reading lists) and used this as the basis of our research proposal. The guidance provided us with a really clear structure to follow and we submitted our proposal to the Lirg Research Award competition and we won! Our winning research proposal is availa- ble on the VLE tutorial. We hope this will help to make research more approachable for others.
The Lirg Research Award gave Hannah and I a chance to test our theories on whether readings lists were a pedagogical tool. The money from the award meant we could provide incentives for students to take part in focus groups and send the recordings out to be transcribed. Therefore some of the administrative burden was removed. Once I had done one research project it was far easier to do others. I hope that this tutorial will help answer some of the questions you have about research and also offer some advice on how to make the research you do more robust.
If you would like to find out more about research, have a look at the tutorials on the VLE and get an idea of how to get started on your research journey. Lirg will be evaluating the tutorials, so would like your feedback on using the tutorials and what you would like more help with in the future. Look out for the evaluations that will be linked to the VLE soon. In the meantime, please feel free to send any comments or queries to Lirg via the com- mittee secretary:
