ON THE COVER: The Caldwell Group Inc. customized an adjustable, 46-ton capacity lifting beam for a wharf modernization project at British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research Station. The model 24S-46t-315 adjustable bail lifting beam was designed by Dan Mongan, special application support, new product development specialist at Caldwell. For the Antarctic conditions, steel alloy selection, welding processes, and type of paint were all important considerations in the design. The 27-foot-long beam, weighing in at 10,100 lbs., was delivered by Caldwell’s Cardiff, UK-based partner, Bishop Lifting Services Wales Ltd., along with two patented model 52-58 adjust-a-leg wire rope slings with 22 ft. reach. The rig will be used to lift 20 wharf frames, all weighting at least 35 tons.
