addressed such pressing topics as: identifying the most similar certification for a crane type that has no specific certification; efforts to engage youth and veterans to close the construction skills gap; the impact of recent marijuana legislation on certification; and the role that virtual reality might play in testing. The Forum also offered an opportunity
for a preview of the results of an NCCCO Foundation survey into how employers are coping with OSHA’s new crane operator evaluation requirement, as well as an overview of the dozen or so crane and rigging presentations lined up for CONEXPO 2020 in March next year. The next Industry Forum on Personnel
Qualifications presented by the NCCCO Foundation will be held in October 2020. y

> Looking to connect with the workforce of tomorrow to positively impact brand awareness? Want to engage with youth while also enhancing perception of the skilled trades? Consider attending the Association of Equipment Manufacturer’s (AEM) Workforce Solution Area at CONEXPO- CON/AGG 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Workforce Solutions Area invites
the CONEXPO-CON/AGG show attendees and exhibitors – along with association members, job seekers and local students – to experience a trade right on the show floor. In addition, participants will learn about the industry and take away best practice ideas from what will be an interactive workforce pavilion. “It’s critical for the equipment
manufacturing industry and the construction market it serves to do what it takes to engage the workforce of tomorrow to consider embarking on a career in the skilled trades,” said AEM Director of Workforce Development Julie Davis (pictured). “Our Workforce Solutions Area will provide a uniquely valuable opportunity to learn how to make a memorable connection with young people by tapping into kinesthetic learning methods that excite a hands-on workforce.” Want to learn more and get involved? Houston Community Turns Out to Support Career Exploration
> Lift & Move USA, hosted by Liebherr USA in Houston, Texas, received one of the largest ever groups of students and educators on Nov. 7, 2019. Nearly 550 high school juniors, seniors, technical college students, teachers and administrators from 17 schools attended the event. An outpouring of support from the
Houston community included the presentation of a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. The certificate was presented to Daniel Pitzer, Managing Director of Liebherr USA Co., by Ivory Mayhorn, CEO and Founder of Launch Point Community Development Center. Liebherr was recognized for its “commitment to shape technological advances in construction machinery.” In addition, Sylvester Turner, Houston’s Mayor, spoke to students about the career opportunities available to them by global employers such as Liebherr. “In addition to showcasing operator and
rigger occupations, as an OEM, Liebherr also highlighted manufacturing and equipment service jobs,” said Tracy Bennett, Director of Lift & Move USA. “For example, a human powered crane from Fluid Power Institute was part of a lesson on hydraulics safety. Likewise, multiple welding stations explained the complexity of skills needed for welding different types of materials. Lincoln Electric’s welding simulation exercises complemented those lessons,” she said. “Hands-on exploration is one of the
best ways to introduce students to careers – especially ones that are critical and in high demand but less visible to the average student. Lift & Move is the type of event that can be a game changer for students,” said Susan Moore, Manager, Communications,
WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE
Regional Workforce Development, for Greater Houston Partnership. A dozen cranes were on display or used
at learning stations, including a 900-ton LTM 1750-9.1 mobile crane, a 550-ton LR 1500 crawler crane, a 110-ton LRT 1100- 2.1 rough-terrain crane, and an 80-ton LTM 1070-4.2 mobile crane operated via Bluetooth control. In addition, Morrow Equipment Company demonstrated a Liebherr 81K.1 fast erect tower crane. “It was an honor for the Morrow team to be a part of the largest Lift & Move event to date. Students had great questions during the fast erect tower demo. We can’t wait for the next event,” said Dennis Germann, Technical Field Advisor for Morrow Equipment. Bishop Lifting Products, Inc., showed
students how to form and inspect wire rope slings; The Crosby Group demonstrated hook testing and load cells; Barnhart Crane & Rigging demonstrated remote control of a multi-axle SPMT trailer; and Deep South Crane & Rigging explained engineering, logistics, and project management. y
A1A Software Adds User-Friendly Features to iCraneTrax
> Two updates to iCraneTrax, the fleet and personnel management software from A1A Software LLC, are designed to make life easier for fleet managers and project managers. The new fleet map feature provides, at a
glance, a visual overview of the key service items for your fleet. Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red icons are a progressive display of the service intervals for each unit. In addition, with user permissions enbabled, both Link- Belt and Manitowoc dealers can access the telematics interface to schedule maintenance intervals for their customers based on usage, a convenient option for fleet managers. “With this feature, fleet managers
at rental companies or dealers could set up maintenance schedules for internal teams or customers to remind them about upcoming service due items,” said Tawnia Weiss, President. In addition, all documentation from
ICraneTrax can now be saved as PDF files to provide cohesive document management related to employees, equipment, or customers. “Dispatch tickets and all other documentation connected to a specific project, can now be filed together in a convenient location,” said Weiss. y
