Gold Anchors for USA


T


he US-based Marine Rec- reation Association (MRA) and the Marina Industries Association (MIA) of Australia


have entered into a collaborative agreement to launch the Global Gold Anchor program in North America. Gold Anchor was first developed in the United Kingdom in 1988 by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA). In 2009, the MIA launched its own program and in 2013 the two asso- ciations launched the single Global Gold Anchor program. The program is analogous with star ratings for accommodation and a strong focus on customer service. Two California marinas are already


participating – Westpoint Harbor Ma- rina of San Francisco and Safe Harbor Cabrillo Isle of San Diego are now Gold Anchor-accredited marinas and a half-dozen more are in line for assess- ment. Over the next two years, there are expected to be a steady stream of marinas entering the program and a pool of trained assessors to deliver the program. MIA President Andrew Chapman


said the collaboration is a particularly exciting development for the global industry. “MIA and TYHA are very pleased to have MRA providing the structure to expand the program into


the US and beyond. MIA will be work- ing closely with MRA and participating members over the coming two years to ensure the program is successfully rolled out and fully aligned with the global program that is established across 27 countries.” MRA President Scott Robertson


agreed the recent MRA Educational and Trade Conference in La Jolla, California, provided an excellent platform to promote the program. “We have both coastal and inland marinas wishing to participate. MRA recognise the many industry development and promotional benefits the Gold Anchor program can deliver for our industry.” TYHA General Manager Jonathan


White commented that involving the MRA will fast track a truly global roll-out of the program. “From Gold Anchors’ infancy back in 1988, it is very pleasing to now have this plan that will ensure rapid expansion of this already well-established accreditation program beyond UK/Europe; the Middle East, Asia, South Pacific and the Caribbean.”

Phase 2 begins at Swanwick Marina


Over the coming Winter, Walcon Marine will be undertaking the second phase of a rolling redesign and replace project at Premier Marinas’ Swanwick Marina on the South Coast of England. The project is taking place in two stages and when completed, the marina will comprise 333 berths in a modern facility fitted out to the highest standards. Phase 1A was undertaken in the months before Christmas, 2018, and saw the installation of Piers A and B, with a total of over 100 berths. Phase 1B began in early 2019, with piers C and D going in along with a double bridgehead and a truss bridge in time for the start of the season. In October, this year, Walcon


resumed work on the site. Phase 2 involves removing the existing E pontoon and its piles and then, once dredging is completed, installing its replacement along with its piles. E pontoon will then be linked with the single access central bridgehead at D pontoon. After that, F pontoon will be removed and in the New Year, dredging will be followed by the new F pontoon plus a G pontoon going in along with a second access bridge and a marina operative


bridge. Completion is scheduled for the Spring of 2020. As with the earlier stages,


Walcon will be responsible for the demolition and removal of all the previous infrastructure ahead of dredging and then undertaking the subsequent piling using its road transportable rig, followed by the installation of its System 2000 walkways and finger piers fabricated at the company’s principal factory just a short distance away. Premier Marinas has specified


a facility of exceptional sophistication. An example of their attention to detail includes a higher freeboard for the pontoons forming Piers C and D, thereby reducing customers’ deck-to-pontoon ‘jump down’ when berthing a vessel. All finger piers will extend the full length of the boats that will be using them, allowing power boats to use their bathing platforms for embarkation and disembarkation. Additional detailing on the


pontoons includes new and larger corner and lateral fenders in a standard livery both to give extra protection for boats and pontoons, and to enhance the overall appearance of the marina (see page 20).
