Netball Abbeyfield school
On Tuesday 15th October Abbeyfield School played in the Year 8 North Wiltshire Area Netball Tournament at Malmesbury School. This is not an unusual occurrence, as Abbeyfield School enter many of the local Area tournaments which take place during the year. As one of the smaller schools in the Area, we have found the local tournaments challenging over the years, but have always taken teams who have wanted to compete with their counterparts and they have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to represent their school. Our teams have always shown a great competitive spirit and resilience in the games they have played and have always been polite and friendly towards the teams from other schools. But we have never managed a top two position in a tournament.
This year, however, we found ourselves in a rather different position. Our year 8 Netball Team had shown great promise
in the year 7 Area Netball Tournament, finishing in 3rd place. We went away from that tournament feeling optimistic and the girls worked hard both in and out of lessons, some of them regularly attending Chippenham Netball Club.
We felt ready to take on the teams again and see if we could build on last year’s result. The team made a great start at this year’s tournament, working hard to get the ball up to our attacking end. Our shooters were consistent
throughout the tournament, scoring on most shooting attempts and our defence put strong pressure on the opposition, turning over the ball on many occasions. We knew we had performed well, winning all but one game, but was it enough to achieve our goal of finishing in the top two teams?
At the end of the tournament the teams all gathered around the hear the results and we were delighted to learn that we had finished in 1ST place. The girls were thrilled to receive their medals and to be crowned ‘Area Champions’.
The team now go through to play in the Wiltshire School Games in March. They will be representing North Wiltshire in a wider Wiltshire Netball Tournament. We would like to wish the team good luck with their next big challenge!
A Celebration of Sports Leadership at Abbeyfield School
At the end of term last year, the Sport Ambassador Awards took place at Abbeyfield School.
The awards celebrate and reflect on the outstanding work the
Sports Ambassadors have shown, not only within the Abbeyfield Community but also in the wider Chippenham Community.

8 Wiltshire and Swindon Relay
breaktime and lunchtime sporting clubs making them more fun and interesting.
